APS-C or ???

Hi, anyway i'm decided to go for something i like. My budget i have is around 2k but i do not wish to settled for a standard lens kit. I want something which i can take mainly landscape and some portraits. But you guys mention aps-c and ???, what is the difference, sorry, i'm still new here. So u compare izzit canon using aps-c is better than those without? cause i'm still deciding between olympus EPL-1 and canon Eos 550D. more or less is narrowed down to this two but i'm afraid that for olympus EPL-1, there isn't much lenses in the market. which lenses u guys think is good for landscape and for some portraits that can recommend? I'm very grateful for all the help that u guys really explained well. Once again, Thank You!! Oh btw i'm going to get my DSLR this coming week so have to really need some advice on some accessories to buy with as well.

APS-C is a standard size sensor on most DSLR cameras. For the EPL-1, the sensor is smaller, thus you have a higher crop factor. If your main purpose is landscape and portraits, I suggest getting a "normal" DSLR from Canon, Nikon, Sony. The larger sensor will give better wide-angle capabilities and also give nicer out-of-focus area blur.

EPL1 is a m4/3 while 550D is a DSLR. Totally different things.

For 550D, you can get the body only and pair with the Tamron 17-50mm. Should be less than $1.7k
For EPL1, you can pair it with the 14-42mm which should be sufficiently wide. Price wise i'm not too familiar. Both should give you about 28mm on the wide side when you do landscape.

Also note that you will need a dry cabinet, memory cards, cleaning kit, bag, etc... So 2k would be quite a comfortable budget to get either combo. Go to the shops to test the equipment yourself and see which is comfortable in your hands. Choose wisely and have fun with photography

A quick rough quide for focal length range for landscape and portraiture is from wide angle to medium telephoto (of course no harm if range is wider). Which is from the width of your sensor to about 4x the length of your sensor. For example for full-frame, it will be about 24-135mm. So for crop sensor, just divide those figures by the crop factor, eg 1.6 for 550D.

4/3 sensor camera (EP-1, GF-1)
1. smaller sensor
2. Generally small sized camera
3. Generally noisier photos at ISO800 and higher
4. EVF (electronic viewfinder) as default.
5. Generally well implemented video function due to their more 'compact camera' like designs

APS-C camera
1. larger sensor
2. Usually a bit bigger b'cause of Pentamirror or Pentaprism for viewfinder
3. less noise at high ISO
4. more shallow DOF (depth of field)


There are a wide selection of APS-C cameras from all the well know brands (Pentax, Canon, Nikon, Sony). Take your time to look at them and their prices. Photo o/p are generally the same.

A camera like the Pentax Kx is only $790 with 18-55mm kit lens. Its a very good camera for the price and probably the best at its price point. Full featured and very good high ISO noise reduction. You'd be let with money to get some serious lenses, flash and other accessories for 2K or under.

if you dont need video and all the technology..

might want to look for a used Canon 400D and then pair up with a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 for landscape use.

save the money for other things. That way you dont lose too much if decide to give up the hobby.

Go for the 550D and the 18-200 (should suffice for now) and from there u can determine ur shooitng style and upgrade from there to better lenses like Ultra wides or primes..
