I've called the "Big 4" (OP, SLR Rev, Manly, TK) and all of them do not carry the above-mentioned lens. I know it's no longer in production but was hoping they'd have some old stock.

Anyway, I'm out of ideas and was hoping for some help from the friendly people here.

P.S. I've also checked out eBay.

P.P.S. I want to get a K-x but the only thing holding me back is the kit lens - I don't want it. If I'm going to spend hundreds on a camera then I want a decent pair of lens to go with it. I was actually planning to get the DA* 16-50mm f2.8 but it's waaay too expensive. =(

P.P.P.S. I am using the camera for (mainly) portraits and (some) landscape.

just get the FA 50 1.4. The 1.7 is discontinued way too long for any shops to have old stock. Your only hope is ebay or B&S.

And btw, the kit lens IS a decent enough lens.

do u mean FA 50mm f/1.4? 1.7 was way long time ago
and the kit lens is the best kit lens u can find when u're buying a dslr body+lens package..

Thinking of finding the FA 50mm f/1.7 in the shops? Dream on, you're a couple of years too late. This lens has been discontinued for more than 5 years and even if there were old stocks, they would have long been snapped up years ago. Frankly the supposed difference in sharpness between the f/1.4 and f/1.7 versions is overrated and overpriced. You want a good 50mm, stick with the FA 50mm f/1.4.

Before you discount the Pentax kit lens, which is actually very good compared to other kit lenses, I think you should thoroughly try it out extensively before you commit on $$$ upgrading to another lens.

Replacing the kit lens with another lens might get you a larger range of focal length, a faster lens and perhaps better auto focus. But is it worth the change? Frankly it’s a tough call - not because of the any shortcomings of the other lenses that you can upgrade to, but because of the good quality of the cheaper Pentax kit lens, which costs next to nothing with the body. This is photography, some people won't think twice to fork out the money even if the optical performance is just a little better while others won't. That's why I still keep the kit lens. End of the day it is your call...

OT: i heard FA 50mm 1.4 also quite hard to find in sg right?

Now have already. Saw a few copy in Slr Revo on saturday.

Ya, SLR still have 2 copy...but not for long...;p

aiyo.. hope they will have it again on july so i can get kx 18-55, 55-300 and this gem..

TS, kx kit lens is a decent if not a very capable kit lens. The way you describe the kit lens, makes me feel as if I am using using inferior lenses. To me, DA* 16-50mm is a rather high end lens, you should consider using the kit lens first before considering upgrading. Cheers.

Just like gold currently, the price of Pentax lenses will keep creeping up, so better plan to buy quickly. ;) Just don't feel sorry when you have to pay more later...

Yes, agree with creampuff as some time ago I wanted the FA77mm but not enough $$ so I saved like mad and by the time I was ready to get it, the price had gone up by about $400, so I still got it. No regrets . . .

Talking abt FA77. There is a copy in Shashinki (Malaysia), Silver/MIJ - perhaps last of the existing stock. SGD$1.4k.

ebay is your best bet to find this one. you need to check it regularly, especially the UK site. I managed to get an F 50 f1.7 for less than $100 on ebay UK...;)

How about the FA 50mm f1.7?? from the reviews i've read it seems it's much better than the FA 50mm f1.4. anyone own both these 50mm?
but its not in production anymore right.. :(
