Renting equipment. Help~

Hi. Currently i only own a nikon D5k with a kit lens.

My girlfriend's birthday is coming so i decided to rent some equipment.
Most probably it will be a chalet.

Any advices?

Get a flash (SB-600 /SB-900)... and if you want, a 17-55mm f/2.8.

I think some folks here will recommend primes, such as the AF-S 35mm f/1.8 or the AF-S 50mm f/1.4G, but I think if you are used to the zoom capability of your kit lens, you may not be used to the primes.

i think i will rent a SB600. SB900 will be too complicated for me to handle?
I was thinking to get a 35mm prime also as it is good for night shots right?
But would this prime be enough for a group shot?

Just rent a flash to use with your kit lens. Don't worry, Nikon's flash system is a breeze to use.

would definitely want to rent a lens. because i want to make this into an album for my girlfriend. i will go read up about sb600 and sb900 to find out their difference.

Get a 50mm (1.4G), longer focal length (factoring the crop) is more flattering for portraits (isolation) indoors.. 2nd a fast wide to mid range zoon in Tammy 17-50 f2.8 or Nikon 17.55 f2.8

i'm definately more comfortable with zoom, because i only have my kit lens. but i don't mind using prime. it should be easy right? Just need to find a position where i can fit all and then crop the photo correct?
do correct me if i'm wrong. but using a 50mm, will i have to stand quite far away to fit everyone into the photo? let's say, 20 people per group taking.

Actually, I suggest you keep to 1 zoom lens and a flash. Forget the 50mm. Will you have time to keep changing lens back and forth?

u can try shooting 50mm with your kit lens. it is not as easy as you think it is, unless u are used to it.

btw, for a group of 20 person, i think u will need to stand quite far. for such situation, u need something wider and couple with the flash, it should be good enough for your photo album.

something wider? do i need a wide angle lens? or can i just stand further back to accomodate all in? which will be better? Sb600 should suffice right?

it depends on the location that you will be shooting in
if you dont really shoot fast, i believe it will be enough
renting a faster lens means you want to shoot wide open?
beware of the limited DOF

im not too sure about the location yet. cause it hasnt been booked. but from my experiences of chalet. its always very dark. minimal lightings in the outside.
