hi pepole,

i need some advice.
I've got a dslr and a lens..
but currently i dont have a dry cabi, saving up for it.

anyone can suggest what i cn do?
heard of silica gels? but i dont quite understand.

how to maintain it?

If you don't know how to handle a DSLR,why did you get one in the first place?

Suggest you get a dry box with silica gel from MS colour for $23.Go and google 'silica gels' for more info...

no need scared fungus, just leave it in the bag when not using... go out n shoot more then you will know how to handle it...

Borrow someone's dry cabinet shelf space and pay rent for the time being :bsmilie:

Ok seriously, just get a dry box and some silica gel. That should tide you through while you save. Please also consider the size/capacity of the dry cabinet that you want to get, based on how far you think you want to go with this interest. A 30L one will be more than enough if you don't intend to buy more lenses or accessories, but a lot of people will probably recommend at least 60L if you think you have a serious interest in this.

2*30L dry cabinets will certainly be more expensive than a single 60L counterpart, assuming you buy the same brand. Buying a DSLR without first setting aside a budget for a dry cabinet shows you didn't really think through the whole process carefully, so don't make the same mistake again. If the DSLR was a gift to you and yet you still don't have any money to buy a dry cabinet, then it's about time you develop a habit of saving your allowance/income :nono:

On how to handle a DSLR (based on your thread title, even though your question in the thread doesn't seem to relate to it at all), you can click here to find out more. Contributed by a wonderful forum member.

i suggest you pray to the dslr gods and ask for enlightenment.

if you are sincere enough they will visit you.

Sadly, I have to agree with question Brother Dennis had put forth ... is DSLR a fashion accessory now?

Some don't even know how to use the accessories fully! Last Friday, was next to Clark Quay taking photos, and this couple was posing using flash, but the flash was pointed skyward, with no bounce or anything, just a diffuser. As I had a bad experience of giving someone a tip or two, decided to just keep quiet and whip out my own flash and bounce, and I guess they felt ashamed, decided to walk away!

So sad.

Firstly...Welcome to ClubSNAP.

Since you are saving for a dry cabinet shows that you are quite knowlegeable and that's a step in the right direction.

I can't phantom your question. Do you want to know what you can do with your camera? or do you want us to suggest what you should do with your camera now that you bought one?

Another thing: you have heard about silica gels but which part of the silica gel you do not understand? The colour? The texture? The smell? The weight?

How to give tips or teach Maintenance? It is something personal to you. On the basic level is to clean it after each use. Make sure it is dust and moisture free at all times.

oh dear, that was me and my gf shooting a spider in midair.

then someone took out a flash quickly , hitting the spider in the process.. and the spider dropped and died.. so we walked away. :embrass::embrass:

Bro...please...

There will always be people who use it as a hobby, some will use it for work and others will use it to hang around their necks. I have compiled alot of tips from CS into my little red book which I bring in all my shoots. Even the Goat's tip on PS was printed out to be read and re-read.

Tell us about your bad experience so that we may learn from your encounter. I'm all ears...

just use it. if its not spoilt, no need to send in.
a good start is to read the instruction manual that comes with your camera. if u don't have, try the internet.

you should keep it in a dry cabinet to prevent fungus growth.

other than that, you might get dust on your sensor, either learn how to clean it DIY or send it in for sensor cleaning at service centre.

after a certain number of shutter actuations, which is not set in stone, and is based on luck, the shutter will fail and you will need to replace it. you will have to send it in too.

therefore, if not itchy dont scratch.

oh my! thats rather bad to kill the spider,
sometime ago i was shooting a big spider, out of sudden it started to move, i got scared. My guy was laughing at me.
oh well i still managed to take a picture of it.

Ahh...now it's getting clearer.

You don't send it in like a car ever few months/year. That would be a waste of money and only serves to enrich their pockets.

Like I said earlier, buy a simple dust blower costing no more than $10 to blow away dust and grit during shoot or when you want to change lens. Other than that, buy a 3M micro fiber cloth costing no more than $3 to wipe the body of moisture including your sweat. There's no need to send it for servicing unless you have a major problem like button failure or shutter failure. DSLR is very hardy and should not fail under normal use.

Important to note is that it should not be put on the floor or on grass field as it might be infected with fungus which will cost a bomb to rectify.

Can you verify your statement?

It's the combination of heat and moisture that encourage fungus growth.
Fungus will still grow in dri-cab if the unit is not properly set or faulty.

In order for fungus to grow, you will need to have the fungi spore. Moisture and heat is only the stimuli to induce it to grow. Where is the fastest way to pick up the fungi spore? On the floor and grass field.

Which part of my statement you need verification?

Exactly, the microscopic fungi spores are air borne and its everywhere with the slightess wiff of air...it doesn't stay on the ground and floors.

Try leaving your equipment in the bag or mount it on a tripod and leave it idling for a week on a normal room without A/C.

Your equipment may have already picked up the fungi spores the moment it leaves the production line and stayed dormant until the ideal catalysts awakens its growth, heat, humidity and prolonged non-usage.
I've left my cameras on grass patches and on the floor countless times and i've yet to get any fungus growth in my equipment.

Hope this forum doesn't get overboard.

my motto:

Dun buy a DSLR if u cannot afford a dry cabinet!

u can spent thousands on DLSR+lens, but one hundred for a dry cabinet cannot afford? :bsmilie:
