hmm. i believe most of us here knows abt the cip system in SG secondary sch. students are supposed to commit at least 6 hours of their time in community services. this topic has probably been debated to death so i wont touch on it.

however lets add a new twist to it.

How abt having a cip system for adults? students are nt skilled. the stuff we students can do are quite limited. such as beach cleaning or flag day. the impact of wad we do are certainly not as significant as what skilled professional adults could do. CIP is supposed to build student's bonding with community. but would it be better to provide a higher quality service while maintaining such a aim?

what if we were to have adults join in the cip? unlike the students version, it is not compulsory. incentives such as tax rebates (like if u donate u get tax rebates kind of stuff), would it help to boost adults into contributing to the less well off of our society? also, students could work with adults and acquire new skills and together may provide a more significant quality of services.

anyone could think of any pros and cons? or maybe solutions to this situation of CIP?

It is known as pro bono work and is applicable to mostly doctors and lawyers. Also donations to registered charity organisations or a Institution of a Public Character (IPC) will automatically result in a tax deduction from the IRAS. :)

hmm yea. but only donations remember? i was thinking something more like the layman can join in too wad. imagine a roti prata seller helping out at old folks home teaching ppl how to cook tasty pratas. gives him tax deduction and at least its mroe meaningful that kids writing get well soon cards for sgh patients. hmm.:bsmilie:

Hmm let's see, you flip dough 10 hours a day, 7 days a week often getting f***ed frequently by unreasonable customers and once you reached home you see a pile of bank statements and bills including car/van or whatever (assuming he is one of those rich hawker) and housing loan bank statements with credit card, telecommunication and utilities bills chasing you for more $$$. Add to that, you have two rowdy kids running all over the place, screaming at the top of their voice.

I am sure you will have the mood to do some charitable work. ;) :bsmilie:

In a way, I do see the angle you are presenting. it might work to a certain extent. The other side of the argument is that sadly, people are then doing charitable work for monetary gains. So this might be a issue where the ends justifies the means?

True, but you might be surprise how getting involved in some charity works helps put things in perspective for some people.; where they realise their so called problems (having a house, credit cards, paying job) are nothing compared to others. :)

Yes, I would have to agree with you on that, often people do not appreciate what they have in life especially if they are caught up in the rat race for the 5 Cs. :)

:) and remember. at the end of they day, they get tax rebates. might be possible seeing ppl are quite money faced. its sorta like a wheel guide. starting u do like tat. but long term run hopefully we get ppl who will commit haha.

and also i feel its like a good thing for the family. bring hte famuily out, spend some quality time doing cip with ur kids and other kids. wouldnt it be nice.
