i have heard many photographers and other ppl using EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM for weddings and indoor events.. i would like to ask, is it a must to use fast lens, or we can use f4 lenses? if using f4 lens, it would be better to couple it with a flash right? TIA..

Its more for advertising purposes imo because if you are good with flash, even an kit 18-55mm can use for wedding one. However for shots where flash would not be appropriate, having fast lenses is very useful.
my opinion if you are starting out with a crop camera, use the Tamron 17-50 2.8 instead of the 24-70 2.8 as its a more "useful" range for crop cameras. If you are using full frame, 24-70 is an excellent range for just about any event.

if u are the main photographer i think using flash will be alright...though ur videographer will hate u for it.
if u are not the main photographer...do not use flash! BOTH the main photographer and videographer will kill u.
if wedding is indoors, try to bump up the ISO (if u are using a good cam), or get a fast lens.

cos i was thinking of getting either a EF70-200 f4 IS or the non-IS version because mainly i will be going into outdoor sports and also indoors event, but i did not consider the f2.8 version mainly cos of the budget and portability(heavier and bigger than f4).. if i get any of the f4 version, i still have to have a flash right? another question would be, which one is more suitable for both of my needs? do i need the IS?
u can't have a one-lens-fit-all-scenario lens. u shld cater to which type of event u mostly shoot for.
i have a fren with the 70-200 u mentioned.. i borrowed it for an indoor shoot before..it sometimes hunts. recently he mentioned he was considering getting the 24-70 f2.8L as well.
i guess the latter would serve u better in indoor shoots cause of the wide focal length as well as the low aperture.
so it all comes down to how often u shoot what. it's like getting a TS lens just for that one shoot per yr of architecture.

24-70mm is a good coverage, coupled with 70-200mm is a good combination but really ex. In my view, a 17-55/ 2.8 with a good flash will do, coz you can crop pictures.

haha.. i would if i had the money.. it's too out of my budget, especially after if i get the 70-200..
I am rather interested in wedding and event photography however, due to the wide ranges of lenses available I am in a lost. I owned 2 camera Canon 50D and EOS 3. I hope the lenses can be use for both camera.

85 f1.8 is usefull if low light and u have flash restrictions.
other than that ur 17-50mm f2.8 with a flash is more than enough for ur given subject and application.
other than lenses, you need experience and practice. wedding photography is not all about having the equipment to cover the event. perhaps you could see if a professional photographer would let you be his/her understudy for a while before you go solo
bro - if you are really into wedding photography, get 2 bodies - FF and 1.6x. hook up a WA to your FF and a 85mm or 70-200mm to your 1.6x. the FF will allow you to capture close up whilst the 1.6x will allow you to capture candid.
