Hi everyone.

I am new to photography and I humbly seek your advice.

1) I just called up a local store and found out that there is a nation-wide shortage of 67mm filters.
Where can I buy cheap and good filters online?

2) Should I get a CPL or a PL?

3) As for ND filter, if I were to buy only one, should I buy the ND2 / 4 / 8?

4) Likewise for graduated ND filter.

Thank you.

1. You can try the mass sales threads. A few nice chaps are selling filters.
2. Depends what you feel like using it for ...
3. Depends what you feel like using it for ...

When you know what you want to do with the equipment, the specs will be obvious to you....
Happy shopping !!! ;)

2) CPL because u r using an AF SLR, Pl will screw up the light entering the camera for metering and focusing
3) For a start I would try the higher ND, any further ND needed u can decrease aperture, But eventually u will find there is no one filter fits all situation etc.
4) GND try get a +3 / +4 for a start. again no one filter fits all la.

1) Mass Sale
2) CPL
3) i will recommend the ND8 (3 stops), CPL doubles up as a ND4 if polarization in work. Of cos if you are into long exposures for "out of this world" images, there's always Hoya ND400 (9 Stops) and B+W ND110 (10 stops) but these are specialized NDs that cut out lotssa light.
4) ND4 and ND8 (more commonly use)

1. Nation wide shortage?? Wow! And that one store knows this? I was just at OP a couple of days back and I saw a lot of 67mm filters. Go get in Mass sales or OP. Shouldn't be a problem.

2. wideband slim CPL

3&4. ND2 ND4 ND8, ND400, GND2, GND4, GND8 all have their uses depending on the ambient light levels and depends greatly on the situation. Do you really know what these filters are for?

Thank you Cleonbus and Madmartian. :)

1) Ya lol, "nationwide shortage". I don't know whether to believe or not.

2) How's a wideband slim CPL compared to the usual CPL?

3) I read that the ND2/4/8 reduces exposure by 1/2/3 stops. Since I am new to photography, and I don't want to spend so much money yet, does it make sense for me to get just the ND8 and increase exposure with my camera if necessary?

Went to Alan Photo last week to get a 67mm UV filter.. they might have CPL for 67mm too... you can go check it out :)

For you, I think it's a case of "if you need to ask, you don't need it yet". The most common filters for most would be a CPL and maybe, UV/skylight/clear filter for protection. Consider slot-in GND if you shoot landscape (even that is optional if you prefer to post-process). Think the others can wait.

u just need a simple UV filter (but get a multi coat to prevent flares) to protect your lens.

then when u learn all the necessary basics (composition, understanding your cam etc) then start to move on to play with filters. You can start off with CPL then ND filters.
