While I do not believe in karma, the above is certainly an interested thread to read. Basically this guy (BucketMan), like anyone one of us, buys a 70-200 2.8L IS mk1 that is stolen, gets a call from a detective and decides to send the original owner the lens back because he feels that it is the correct thing to do. He (BucketMan) posted his story on the forum, and someone took the initiative to rally the forum members to chip in to get him back a new lens out of good will. With the help from Helen (a POTN member and Adorama public relations personnel) who gave him a good price on a new lens, not only have they managed to raise the amount needed, they've raised enough for a 70-200 2.8L IS mk2 (special price) in a SINGLE DAY, with the extras going somewhere, probably to fund the running of the site.

I say, good job!

Here is your chance to earn your brownie points for the day!

For those that do not know the story, BucketMan is a POTN member that recently found out that a 70-200 f/2.8 IS he purchased last year off of Craig's List was stolen. Long story short, he just found out that he had to return the lens and is out for the money that he spent on it.

Here is the thread:

Here is the relevant conclusion:

Many POTN members stepped up in the thread and offered to send BucketMan some money to help get a new 70-200 f/2.8 IS. I can say with pretty good certainty that he will not accept anyone's money, I know a lot of people like him. For this reason, I decided to take it upon myself to set up a Karma Fund that POTN members can donate to to help buy a new lens that we can send to him.

I have also been in contact with Adorama to see if they would be willing to cut us a good deal on a 70-200 f/2.8 IS. I'm still waiting to hear back, but I want to get the fund rolling and see just how much we'll have to offer.

I have set up a fund that people can use PayPal to contribute to the fund. I have chosen to use www.chipin.com for this because it is free and allows you to set a goal. This goal will show everyone exactly how much has been donated and how much more may be needed.

The donations will go to my PayPal account. I know that I am asking a lot of people to trust me on this. I am not going to profit in any way on this. This is the only way I can see to make this work.

In order to help put people's minds at ease, I will do a little FAQ here.

Who I am:
My name is Derek Cecil and I live at 522 E Center St in Madison, SD, USA.

Why I am doing this:
Because I think it is the right thing to do. Just like BucketMan, my wife and I recently had a baby and I know how tight money is right now.

Can you trust me:
All I can do is give you my word that I will do nothing other than spend you money for what I am stating here.

What I am contributing:
I plan on making about a $50 contribution, but it won't be through the ChipIn page. Paypal fees will be pulled out of your contributions. Because of this, we will actually be about 3% short of the stated ChipIn goal. 3% of $1800 is $54. I will cover that shortfall when I buy the lens.

Where I am getting the lens from:
I have talked to Helen Oster at Adorama and she is seeing if there is any way that Adorama can help us out on this. Hopefully they will be able to cut us a deal on the lens. If they cannot, I will likely try to talk to B&H as well.

What happens if we don't raise nearly enough to buy BucketMan a new lens:
If we don't get enough, I plan on sending the money directly to BucketMan to help him defray the cost of buying a lens for himself.

What happens if we raise too much:
I have set the goal at $1800. If we get that much and we are able to get a better deal on the lens, I will take some input and get BucketMan some accessories with the remaining cash. Anything additional left over I would like to donate to a firefighter relief acency (BucketMan is a firefighter).

What if you do not have a PayPal account:
If you would like to mail me a check or money order to add to the fund, send me an email at: derek@cecilphoto.com. I am able to change the target number at the ChipIn page and will lower it by your donation amount after I get the check.

You can also pay by credit card through PayPal, without having to set up a PayPal account.

Again, can you trust me:
The only thing I can offer is my honor. I hope that you will trust me and we can do a great thing for a great person. If you need further assurance, email me and I can give you my phone number.

If there is anything I did not tough on here, please let me know. I am trying to be as transparent as possible with this.

Where to donate:

Please note that the meter uses a flash player and doesn't seem to update well with Firefox and possibly some other browsers. It works great with IE and Opera.

How it all started

BucketMan said:
So, im at work yesterday, having a great day, nice weather, things are well.

I get a phone call, private number, so I send it to voicemail. Later in the day I check my messages.

"Hello, this is Detective ----- from the King police department. I am calling in regards to a Canon lens that you purchased last year, if you could call me back at ------ I would appreciate it."

My heart sank. I became nauseated. My beloved 70-200 that I got on Craigslist was indeed stolen.

September 2009

I saw the lens on CL for $950, yes the 2.8 IS version. At first I thought it was a mistype. However I talked to the guy and he in fact said it was that version and he wanted $950 for it. He seemed like a legit person, a young kid in fact, with an interest in photography...how dumb am I.

He was in North Carolina but would meet me in Wytheville, VA, an equal drive for both of us of about one hour. I talked to him on the phone several times, confirming our meeting time and place.

So, up rolls this non-suspicious looking Honda Accord, nothing fancy, nothing ghetto. Out of the passenger side comes a pimply faced teenager holding the lens, case, hood, caps and a CP filter. He seems nice, knows stuff about the lens and cameras. He let me test it on my 40D right there, said he had a 50D. He said the lens was just too heavy for him, and he wanted a lighter zoom, he was a skinny kid so I understood that, a lot of people complain about the weight. The lens was in great condition, worked flawlessly on my camera. Money was handed over and I had finally achieved "L" greatness!

Now, I know $950 was a great deal, but not unheard of. He had everything but the box and warranty card, which not everyone keeps. So, the lens was mine. I loved it, we had soe many great times together! I bought her a fancy UV filter, 1.4x TC, Macro tubes, man we took some nice shots! I cleaned her regularly, she was my pride and joy...well, until we had my daughter in October.

So, fast forward to today. I talked to the detective, super nice guy. He said the lens and about $14,000 worth of photo equipment was stolen from a studio in King, NC, or thereabouts. He asked me if I would return the lens. As a aspiring photog I had only one choice. If my stuff was stolen and recovered, I would want it back.

So, this afternoon I will be mailing the lens to the King PD and it will be returned to its rightful owner. I will be out $950 because I bought it in Va and the King PD does not have jurisdiction there. I will be out the cost of shipping as well. I will be out of a great lens. A great big empty spot in my camera bag.

I do believe in karma, I truly do. I have may things to be thankful for, including a great and healthy family, so it could be worse.

So, Mr. or Mrs. camera studio owner in King, North Carolina. I babied that lens, took extra special care of her and cleaned her after every outing. It was never dropped and always stored in my bag on my 40D. I hope you will be glad to have her back.

(sigh)

This sort of act of goodwill would 99.999% never happen in S'pore.

not really la, just that you haven met one?

Perhaps for health complications for a forum member (I think HWZ had one last time but I might be wrong), but not for gear acquisition...

Happens more in the US ...

I remember one instance where a young man in the US lost the use of his legs in an accident, and the forum members as well a few groups rallied together to raise something like US$15,000 in a month to get the young man a custom-made wheelchair that would allow him to continue enjoying the great outdoors and his passion.

Something similar happened in CS a long time ago, but it involved stolen equipment, and another CSer tried to rally members to help. The thread went deadly silent after that.

there are a couple of pretty successful forum based donation runs in singapore too

Thing is, theoretically under most legal systems our good Samaritan BucketMan is not legally entitled to the lens anyway.

The original owner is still the rightful owner, unless his insurance company has paid up in which case the insurance company would own it.

So while maybe he did it in the best interests and without knowing that he could've been compelled to give it up anyway, he is only doing what he's legally obliged to.

I agree with this. He does have to give it back as it is stolen property that has been retraced.

It was nice of the forum members, though, to identify with his trouble and raise him money to help him out. :)

haha. but how many of us will do so? :)
