New to Canon DSLR

Hi to everyone here in CS. Its good to be here in this forum. Can't wait to learn new things, techniques and all other things pertaining to the world of photography..

I just bought a Canon EOS 50D with a EF-S 18-200mm IS lense setup. Accessories that comes with it:

1. 2 x battery pack
2. 2 x 8GB CF card
3. 1 x steinzeiser MC UV filter
4. 1 x canon eos crumpler bag
5. Lens workbook etc..

QNS:
1. What other important accessories do i need to have for this near future?
2. I would want to buy an external flash and a lens hood. which brand and model do i have to get?
3. Do i have to get a dry-cabi or i could just throw sum silica gel into the bag?
4. What other tips n tricks that i need to know for beginners?

I'm into this world of DSLR cos of my interest to photography and maybe i can do freelance to earn some $$$..

U've everything needed to get started really..

Get a good drycabin and it'll serve u a long while.. If you're looking at flash units.. go straight for the 580 EXii, and u wont look back.. it's a good investment in the long run.. along with it.. a good diffuser for the flash unit or just do some reading up on how to bounce flash effectively...

Alternatively, for the price of a good flash, you could get quite a lot of good reflectors (assuming u dont wanna shoot night portraits)... and yeah .. there's a lot of accessories you could buy .. but with all the money .. i'd suggest first and foremost, get a better lens

1. I don't think you need other accessories now for the time being, just keep shooting and learning first?
2. IMO i think get canon flash/lens hood is better, confirm wont give any problem.
3. It would be better if you get a dry-cabi, cause everytime change silica gel, add up the cost of it, can get you a dry-cabi already, since nowadays a dry-cabi cost around $100+ for 36L.
4. READ MORE, SHOOT MORE and POST MORE.
i think for beginners(eg. me), i would practise on shooting a sharp image + practising on different kind of composition(rule of third, leading lines, frame within a frame, etc).

This are my opinions, but the ultimate decision still lies on you whether to get extra accessories/dry cabi or what brand of flash/lens hood you wanna get.

Thank you for the swift reply. Will be getting the flash unit. But for wedding ceremonies and outdoor photgraphy, which lens is best suited? or can i make do with the lens im currently on..I have read sum of the types of lenses especially the L models.....

Thank you for the good tips..Appreciate it so much...As i have alot to learn here, i do need guidelines and useful info for me to work on further...I will be going for the canon free training session...maybe that will do me good for a start..

Master your current gear before investing in other lenses. If you do not know how your current gear is limiting you, you will not know what advantage other gear will give you.

like what others say: drybox, lens hood first. flash if you can get 580EXII, otherwise go third party like Nissin.

Hi welcome. Hope you will enjoy shooting as much as the others in this forum.

Go with your current setup first. Get the flash if you shoot alot indoors.
If not, maybe try getting a 50mm f1.8 prime which is quite cheap to play around too. You will love it.

BTW Flash and Dry Cabi shd be your next gear to get.

Currently your Lens 18-200 is a great all rounded lens, use it wisely and see which is the focal lenght range u use it frequently, then if u wanna upgrade in the future, then u will know which lens range you prefer.

Welcome to the club.

Since you are new, read up as much as you can, because it will give you grounding and foundation as to why certain pictures you take turn out the way you didn't want. Books? Library or book shops or photography specialty bookshop like Riceball Photography Books at Funan/Parkway Parade.

As for gear, you are more than good to go. If you are worried about your lens not being sufficient for certain occasions, you have to first know the current kit's limitations before you can know what is missing in your existing inventory.

If you want to buy an L lens, go ahead if you have the $$$ resources, but understand that even with a good L lens, and a crappy photographer, you'll end up with a crappy picture (not to put you down, but just want to encourage you to build up the basics).

Using a dSLR is very different from using a P&S compact camera. You are now controlling everything, so if you don't know how to control it, again, pictures don't turn out the way you want. Just like learning to drive a car, you don't become an F1 driver overnite without having to know how to drive stick.

Maybe if you like, you can invest in a starter fast lens, the 50mm f1.8 which is good for portraiture and in my experience, BATA (Buy And Throw Away) should you break the lens. Couple that with a flash, it will be good enough for a simple wedding photography gear, but don't expect to be the main photographer of the event, cos you will still need a lot more to learn. (All of us are learning something new everyday, for your consolation.)

If you want to do night photography, yes, a tripod is certainly needed. Don't invest in a cheapo tripod, nor do you want to invest in a very expensive Carbon Fibre tripod, unless you can afford it, and know its limitations.

Oh Sh*T , i had bought this Steinzeiser filter at Harvey Norman for $38.00 bucks. and Saw it @ BnS selling $12.00 bucks...:bigeyes:

1. Read books and learn from friends or online guide etc
2. Try shooting some photos
3. Put into computer
4. Look at the photo and think how you can improve
5. Get people sugestion
6. Apply what you think is optimised solution and repeat step 2 - 5
7. If you think it is good enough, do step 1 for more information

Side quest: Post unknown stuff in CS forum. PLEASE refrain for not doing a search on google or CS forum before posting your question. If the answer you find cannot satisfy you, then you post the question here... I have seen tons of thread about EF-S 17-55mm in canon thread...

Stuff you will find a need for in quest: A rocket blower, a dry container for camera lens etc (Cabinet or box etc etc), a microfibre cloth, Isopropyl solution (optional), Tripod (optional and if you do, get a good one that can last)
Stuff that you might be want to buy after you advance your level: more lens (Care the BBB virus), more camera bags (Care the BBB virus), External camera flash (Do get a good one like 580EX that can last you long), Filters like CPL (Care the BBB virus), studio equipment (care the BBB virus)

Get a dry cabi first to protect your gear from humid weather when not in used. The rest can wait until you know what you really need from the learning process
