Going to China and definitely visiting Zhangjiajie, longsheng and Guilin/Yangshuo.

Want to ask if anyone has visited Fenghuang and whether it's worth the taking a slight detour to see it. I was considering scrapping it off my itinerary due to time constraints, but it recently appeared on one of the 8 'must go' places in china.. sooooooo

Also, if anyone has info on the transport options from Zhangjiajie to Guilin or Longsheng, do let me know!

Any other tips also greatly appreciated!

Fenghuang is an absolutely must go place. I wouldn't mind living there. Where did it appear as 'one of the 8 'must go' places in China' ? If it's a documentary, I would sure like to see it.
Try to stay at least 2 nights there, especially in or near the ancient town itself.
Some pics of Fenghuang from my visit there...

darn, the pictures look nice.

Now i got to work out how to get to Guilin or Longsheng from Fenghuang. Anyone with experience with that?

From Zhangjiajie can take train to Guilin. Need to change train @ Hunan Changsha or Guangxi Liuzhou. Travel time >12hrs

Can check China Rail in the link below

Yeah, I saw those routes before, it seems like a terribly big round to travel down to Guilin.

As I plan to travel to Longsheng, I was thinking of taking the train down to Sanjiangxian and taking a bus from there down to Heping. Problem is that the train reaches Sanjiangxian at 1am.

If I go to Fenghuang, I was thinking of taking a bus down to jiushou or huaihua and taking the train down to Sanjiangxian, then heading down to Longsheng.

p.s. someone is asking to join this trip, so I thought I'll ask if anyone is keen since he/she will be damn lightbulb (since I'm traveling with gf..). anyway, trip details as follows:

1-may: sin-guangzhou (tiger) then fly to zhangjiajie (some china airline)
2-may: Zhangjiajie
3-may: Zhangjiajie
4-may: Zhangjiajie + bus to Fenghuang
5-may: Fenghuang + train to Sanjiangxian
6-May: Sanjiangxian to Longsheng (rice terraces) then guilin
7-May: Lijiang cruise
8-May: Yangshuo
9-May: fly Guilin to KL to Sin (air asia)

Plans may change.. i might decide to cut out Fenghuang due to lack of time..

U should spend min 2-3 days in FH. Cut short on ZJJ. Or skip Guilin.

I would say FH is more "authentic" than Yangshuo, which has become a bit like a "Lonely Planet backpacker" stopover.

FH has hordes of local daytime tourists but it becomes quieter at night because everyone is in a hurry to get to ZJJ. In terms of photography and shopping (for yr gf), there's more value at FH. I loved the place so much I stayed for a week there.

Since you plan to go Longsheng and also, stopping at Sanjiangxian, you may wish to consider the "Tong" tribe around Sanjiang area. This tribe is famous for the town village and bridge. Tong tribe people stays around Guizhou and Guangxi. I have not been there but read about it and seen some pictures. Do a google search.

yeah, I read about that in my LP guide, but unless i miss the train, I think I'll skip that and chengyang due to lack of time. Sigh, if only i had more leave, I'd be able to see so much more

Your travel period runs right smack in the Chinese week long Labour Day National Holidays...
Good luck to you in getting train/bus tickets and accomodation, not to mention the expected large crowds you'll meet up with everywhere.

let me recall my itinerary

day 3 Zhangjiajie to pheonix town by car 60rmb

That's a really short visit to Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang !

extend my bzi trip for a short break-away mah......
so bro still going china for shooting ? I mean pic-shoot not other kind of firing :bsmilie:

yeah, it's smack in the middle of the holiday season, but I've booked most of what I can already, so no worries. Probably might be a good time for tourist portraitures

Also, I didn't plan to pack everything tightly like that, but got carried away after looking at pics :D

Now there's a bus from Fenghuang to Guilin, so might just squeeze out sanjiang and maybe longsheng if there isn't time.

ok, i'm back! I thought I'll post a summary for reference in case anyone wants to plan a trip there

my itinerary turned out like that:

1-may: sin-guangzhou (tiger) then fly to zhangjiajie (some china airline)
2-may: Zhangjiajie
3-may: Zhangjiajie + evening bus to Fenghuang
4-may: Fenghuang + bus to jishou then train to Sanjiangxian
5-may: Sanjiangxian to Longsheng (rice terraces)
6-May: Longji titian to guilin then straight to yangshou
7-May: yangshou
8-May: Yangshuo
9-May: fly Guilin to KL to Sin (air asia)

First day walking around guangzhou, mainly eating and checking out the shopping/trading opportunities, so not much pictures or sightseeing there (but good food.. burp!)

I got waylaid in Zhangjiajie when i landed late at night and ended up taking a tour package. BIG MISTAKE.. the tours are usually to the very touristy places and have lots of hidden cost. Be firm and dun join the tours. The only good thing out of that is that I managed to join their night trip out of Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang. Nice scenery at ZJJ but just too many tourist and too darn expensive. Overall a bit overrated

In Fenghuang, managed to stay at a homestay for S$10 a night. cheap and good. Fenghuang is a nice place to chill out and just walk around the old town sampling good food and taking pictures.

Journey to Longji Titian was a bit of a nightmare because we decided to save a day and travel through the most direct route (through the night). this consist of taxi to bus station, bus to jishou, taxi to train station, train to sanjiang, minibus to town, stay for the rest of the night, taxi to bus station, bus to longsheng followed by bus to ping'an.. you get the picture..... the train was on the 'wuzhuo' (free seating), which is overcrowded, dirty and noisy.. the real china experience! luckily longji more than made up for it with the fantastic rice terraces. Of all the places, this was the highlight of the trip. food is expensive there though.

Guilin is just another city.. was wet and misty when we arrived, so we decided to skip the city's main sights and head straight to yangshuo. We heard about the 'must do' lijiang cruise, but was advised to skip it and take a bamboo raft from xingping for a fraction of the cost instead. we did that and a day of cycling in yangshou. Overall, a very pleasant experience. One can idle away weeks and months in yangshuo without running out of activities. Xijie is very backpacker (i.e. noisy) though, so I decided to stay slightly off the main stretch. A super nice room for S$20 a night

alright, pictures to follow soon I hope!

Hi, thanks for sharing. I will also be going to Guangxi (in June). Main stops would be Longsheng, Guilin and Longji rice terraces.

Maybe you can start a thread in the Travel and Landscapes forum when you post up your photos.

Looking forward to more when you get started. Cheers. :)

WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.. which part of ZJJ is this in? I didn't reach this area... got herded around all the standard areas by the tour.. sigh

I have been to guilin last may,it is a nice experience, recommend take the boat to travel along the river, also be sure to go to Yangsuo, you can ride bike from guilin to yangsuo, such a beautiful place!:)

The river cruise at Guilin is actually quite boring and not nice as a lot of the mountainous scenery are ruined by modern buildings that have sprung up over the years.

If staying over at Guilin, one of the 'must-see' there is the night scenes. They have lit up very nicely some of the buildings there and are really worth photographing. The building look so much better at night as compared to day time.

Yeah, heard the Guilin Lijiang cruise is overrated and expensive. What I did instead was to go to Xingping, then take a cruise on a Bamboo boat to Yangdi and back. Alternatively, you can also take a cruise from Yangshuo for about RMB10 per person (depending on how hard you bargain)
