1. In what area is critique to be sought?
Composition...... tying 2 subjects together in a single image (words + pic in hole).... does the opaque background add to the 2 subjects?

2. What one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
Keeping things as simple as possible

3. Under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
was walking around the campus of Jilin University when i came across this banner with holes cut in it to prevent it from being blown away by strong winds. Waited 15mins for that little window to 'set' itself up with subjects

4. What the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture.
I like the simplicity of the composition with the little twist (little pic in window).....

Wow, first one....honoured.

Like the idea too, however, the meaning of the two character and the framed picture ( subject ) does not link.

ah thanks cabby! can u or someone help me translate the 2 characters ? I can speak but am otherwise illeterate in chinese :bsmilie:

the leftmost character does not contribute to the picture for me.

i like the quirky idea but i would simple present this as a square crop with the one character (which is flipped) and the scene through the hole.

点燃 (dian ran) - means to light up with fire.

or ...ignite.

if the cut out opening is replaced with somthing like lighting a candle might have strengthen the whole effort.

to the couple of PMs received asking what camera and lens were used....... I'm not saying :) ...it does not matter and is irrelevant.

metered using centre-weighted metering ..... took a reading off the background to make sure what was in the 'box' was half decently exposed

I would like to ask Mod what sort of tonic or essence or vitamin supplement that he has taken to develop such sharp sense of perception in searching for photogenic subject/object.

Maybe this question is more relevant.

Perhaps he can kindly list them out and where he purchase them and the price also and also who is the salesperson who attended to him. :bsmilie:

instead of asking for camera setting.

idea is there but it would have been more meaning if the words were reversed. neither here nor there. the 2 stories do not gel.

also alittle flat for me. some contrast will be nice.

i..... it would have been more meaning if the words were reversed......

ha ha this could not be helped.... if i stood on the other side of banner with the words correctly faced, the background was just an empty field... so yes, the thought did occur to me but nothing interesting to fill the box with...

trying to help out critique section also kenna suan :bsmilie:
although the words and 'box' pic does not quite gel, one needs to always have an enquiring mind...... developing a skill of walking slowly helps too ha ha ha:bsmilie:

I have about 100+ variants of this image from different banners, words and subject matters up and down this 50m stretch of path

How about that opaque/translucent background of the environment of sky, trees, building ? I felt it was a 'quiet' but important element to the image......... any thoughts ?

yes, it adds to the picture.

which is why i said, left side not important, also no translucent area. ;p

hmm. my initial thoughts, i had a hard time trying to seek for tat box. did u purposely edit it to monochrome? i kinda feel if that small lil box part had colors it would be better:x

camera was in Dynamic B&W mode and shot in JPEG ..... never again.... I should have shot it in color and BW'ed it via PP ....... the output in BW mode gave me a file size that was just too small to get creative with

but even if I'd shot it in color, I'm not really into too much PP manipulation (just USM, contrast, BW conversion and resizing)

cool idea. Shooting picture in frame. But some how the subject is too small to make it out what they are doing there. Reverse chinese character does have its unique style.

arhhhhhhh wasted T_T

i strongly felt tat the colouring of the small box would had been marvelous :X

the left letter totally throws the photo. contributes nothing but clutter to the right letter (and subject). have the dian character in a square composition with the edges just nice fill up the frame (sort of like how a chinese character fills up an imaginary box). then i feel mayhaps the composition will be much stronger, with the square reinforcing the emphasis on the word, but with the small window throwing a discordant picture into the mix.
