Is 18-200mm lens a must for holidays overseas? I used my kit lens 18-70mm, most of the time. I find it adequate. Need advice. Do not want to hug a white elephant.

The 18-70 would be the most used range generally. Lenses above 100m are needed for certain shots and you will hate yourself for not bringing it when needed. It happens all the time. Since you have the 18-200 and if weight and space is not a problem, why not bring that?
From my personal experience, when I don't know what touristy situation I'll be in, I'll use 18-200 which covers most of the brightly lit (like daytime outdoor) situations. Additionally, 18-200 has VR function to dampen hand shake effect. If I have better idea of the touristy situation like after being there several times, I may opt for 18-70 or 17-50 or 17-55 or other more suitable lenses.
It is thread starter preference for 18-70 or 18-200, depending on how much information one has about the holiday situation.
Hi there, in my view, if you really need it, then it will be a must for you, if you think that you are going to shoot within that focal range. While i think that that your 18-70 is adequate enough, if you feel that you might need a longer reach to get a certain shot, then by all means get the lens. I guess people label it as a holiday lens because of the range that it covers, in this case an all in one zoom lens so that you don't have to lug around so many lenses and added weight during your holiday.
Welcome to CS I'll go with the 18-200mm lens. Some places we go maybe once in a life time & I would not want to miss the shot.
But if you don't have the lens, then no point buying because you'll be overlapping your current kit lens, which you find it adequate. Go with your kit lens & maybe use the cash to buy a better lens when you come back

personally i dont need such a long range hence i prefer to stick with my d90 18-105 kit most of the time. but when i do i prefer to mount a 55-200 instead.

Read up and make your best decision from it.
If you are already using 18-70mm for 85-95% of your shots, the question becomes whether you'd want to spend the money and lug the additional weight of a 18-200mm.
There is never enough focal lengths, the best we can do is to reduce the need to carry that 300/2.8 for that one bird shot throughout the tour.

Depends on ur shooting style and what u expect from ur holis~
For me 105 is the longest focal length i will need thought most i am adequate up till 70 (all on 35mm) .. I reckon u stick with 18-70 (if u need the extra reach, get the 55-200 instead)

Definitely not, if not then the 18-200mm will long be out of stock, if every traveller need one.
Thanks for all your valuable inputs. Lugging extra lens and changing lens invites dust into sensor. No thanks.
That's oversimplifying and incorrect. Dust finds its way to the sensor even if you never change your lens. Not changing lenses (or simply always using the same) defeats the purpose of having a DSLR. Sensors can be cleaned.
