well, im not so amazed at toyota. and we're talking about VW, that how i think of them.

I've rented Golfs on various trips and my last three cars since 2003 have been essentially the Audi version of that - same chassis, same engines, although different interiors.

Personally I think the Golf has gone slightly downhill from the Mk4 to the Mk5; certainly interior build quality and feel went down noticeably. Drive wise it's pretty typical for the marquee, fairly precise and planted, very "European" suspension, not particularly dynamic but totally adequate handling. Engines are certainly on the better regarded end of the scale within its section of the market, diesels are not as refined as their BMW equivalents but very adequate compared to almost everyone else, petrols are frugal for their performance bracket.

Generally fairly reliable, very high resale values in the UK. Despite the impression they're well built and put together (and they are in terms of fit and finish) they don't score highly as some of the best European marquees in terms of NCAP safety tests - Renault for example do much better at those.

I don't know what the price differential is in Singapore, but when I got my previous A3 it was only £1k more than the same Golf, and at those figures it was an easy decision to make for me - better customer service, better interior, and more importantly better resale value. I also felt the Mk5 Golf had gone backwards in interior quality compared to the Mk4.

i don't own the car, but i've driven rental golfs before, the small one and big one.

not a fan of cars, so don't know the models, both were golfs though.

both kicked the ass out of the fords i got to try. so all i can say is that, if you have a choice between ford or vw, go for vw, all other things being equal. :D

In terms of quality vw's used to have major issues with their electronics (first hand experience). I was talking to some service engineers of vw last year and they admitted their were issues a few years ago but those issues have been solved.

All cars will have some issues, you just hope that they aren't serious issues. (i.e. lately all these toyota, honda recalls)

Germans do good engineering, but you do pay more, versus the japanese comparable models.

currently driving a Honda but it is always my dream to get a Scirocco. i fell in love with the Scirocco ever since i saw it in the showroom. used to like the Golf GTi though. i think you can never go wrong with german engineered cars though you pay a premium for it.

Driving a 1.4L scirocco now. Stunning car. You'd never believe it's a 1.4L car. Very quiet, handling and response is superb. Loving it so far. Fuel consumption is about 11-12 km/L, road tax 620 bucks a year. Very good value for money for the amount of power this car is able to churn out. I tuned mine to stage 1 now so it has 200 horse power and 340 torque. Can feel the amazing difference. just a light tap on the accelerator and I'm blasting away overtaking everything. hahaha

Was driving my family 1.8L honda civic previously and i can really feel the massive upgrade in power after i've switched over to the volkswagen even though the honda is a 1.8L.

The interior is really beautiful as well. Love that everything is leather instead of the crappy plastic interiors of japanese cars. The touch screen radio unit is superb as well. Just dump all your mp3s into an SDHC card, and you'll be able to control all the mp3s on the touch screen.

All in all, i love my car. My dad will be getting a Passat CC next month as well. Now that's another superb ride. lol

scirocco looks good but performance wise a little disappointing.

forget polo.it's way underpower and a little over priced.

obviously, other people didnt wanna 'play' with you.

a wrx easily will tear you into pieces.

you have to watch your sweeping statements.:)

but definitely better than my GE8 for a 1.4l car. even the lowest end of the Scirocco has 40 more horses than the GE8.

say jeanie... when you said the performance is not that good... you referring to the 1.4l or the 2.0l variant? and which car are you comparing it to? the Golf GTi?

however, have to agree on the Polo bit. not worth the money.

what sweeping statements? it's true that a wrx will tear me to pieces with its 0-100 in 4.7 seconds but i'm talking about normal overtaking on the expressways and roads, no ones referring to racing hardcore on the singaporean roads.

plus the wrx is so ugly and noisy, only ahbengs drive it

i was referring to the 2l ones.
test drove it.
i love the design, but unfortunately, the acceleration wasnt as impressive.
i know it's just a 2 liter, but i'm a performance freak.

man...you really just killed yourself everytime you post.
please do yourself a favour and open up your eyes before you step on more toes.
say you dare go into scooby forum and post 'only ahbengs drive it'?

i owned a jdm wrx sti type RA before.
and nope i wasnt a ah lian.

and as for your 1st para, normal overtaking on xpressways?even a suzuki sx4 or cherry 2Q can overtake any car, as long as you step on it harder than the others.
so does it justify your statement of your scirocco and ovvertake EVERYTHING?

come on.really.

dont bother with people who make sweeping statements like that.

he definitely doesnt appreciate the flat 4, nor the boxer growl.

and his vw can tear ANYTHING.

yawn....
