Hi CSers,

I have abit of a problem in choosing between these two lens, pls do give some advice.

I know their price is the same cos helped my friend purchased before. In fact, I do not know why Sigma's 50 f1.4 is much larger and costs more. The bokeh is also good.

It mainly depends on the distance you wish for. I presume you are using a crop camera. Most FF users will not be asking this question.

I owned a 50 f1.8 and 85 f1.8. They give good results. The bokeh for 50 f1.4 is good and so is the 85 f1.8.

I ask is becoz both seems to have is good and the price is about the same, the only advantage i see is the 85mm coz is not in my range of lens

I see. Go for the 85mm f1.8 then. It is sharp enough to kill. 50 f1.4 tried before, cannot really tell them apart. Some FF users prefer 50mm as the closest to a 35mm.

With your current setup, I presume your plan would be 85mm then consider for 50 f1.2 instead. :)

thats why this thing is bothering me for awhile

personally, i would love to go for the 85mm f1.8. it would give me the reach i need for candid portraits.

try both, then decide.

this is just 纸上谈兵。

I have both. I preferred the 50mm f1.4 on a crop, but prefer the 85mm f1.8 on a FF for taking portraits.

to TS

you do have a 70-200, why not just fix a day's worth of shooting at 85mm and see if you like the focal lenght ? then fix Another day of shooting at 50mm and see if you like that focal lenght ??

The most important consideration here prob is the focal lenght in my opinion ... personally I will go for the 50mm, canon or sigma both are ok ....

Cheers and happy shooting ;)

Agree with previous poster... with the high costs of the lenses, the "best" solution perhaps is to go and rent the said lenses and try first. About $40-50 per lens per day? Might save you a $xxxx bad decision =)

depends on what you intend it to shoot...

85mm if my intention is portraits. i had the 50/1.8 before on my 40D which is similar to the FOV of 85mm on FF & its too tight for my liking if used for general purpose. now, im lovin' my 50/1.8 on FF. not too wide, not too tight...

but thats me, my cup of tea may not be your cup of tea.

We share almost the same setup ha.... I would recommend the 50/1.4 cause it's light and will be easy to bring around on a simple day outing. Just to play with your mind (mine too)..... 135/2?

Portrait on FF : 85 f1.8

The FL suit my need and also due to reliability reason

Crop: 50mm F1.4
FF: 85mm F1.8

I personally prefer 85mm F1.8 over 50mm F1.4, as 85mm uses the more superior Ring USM. But then, 85mm on crop is very very tight.

EDIT:
Just stared and envy on your signature.... 85mm F1.8 for you then. Creamy bokeh FTW! But then your lens collection very good le, consider for 70-200mm F2.8?

I owned both before paired with my 40D.

TS, you have the perfect line up for walkaround shots. So I assume you want to add this one mainly for portraits. If that's case, then the question is what type of portraits do you usually shoot. Full, half, or head&shoulder? Indoor or outdoor?

I sold my 85mm and kept 50mm.

Note that TonyT has a crop sensor, so 50mm x 1.6 = 80mm. :)

go for 85mm f1.8! ! ! if you regret, sell to me.. hehehe..
I always wanted to buy that lens but sometimes thinking of 135L f2 confuses my mind. ;)
