tripod or monopod

currently looking at the option of getting either a monopod or tripod
and it seems to me that a monopod is slightly lighter than most tripod.

just wondering whether is there any pro and cons using a monopod or tripod

A monopod is not slightly lighter than a tripod, it's significantly lighter if you are comparing a similar spec monopod with a similar spec tripod (by spec I mean same "level" in the manufacturer's range).

However they serve totally different purposes. A monopod is there primarily as weight support with long lenses, and secondarily as camera support to help you gain an additional stop or two of shutter speed before handshake sets in.

It will not replace a tripod other than in those two situations.

eh... simply because a tripod can stand on it's own, allowing you to take long shutter hence especially useful in night shots... a monopod is not going to do the job, no matter how stable you try to hold your cam for a long exposure, there is bound to be movements hence resulting in image blur...

monopod is more for support and is useful for ppl with big lenses / long zooms / indoor conditions... a monopod will help you restrain the shake to only 1 plane, hence resulting in less image blur...

TS, if you are unsure, get a good tripod, and those that are able to detach one of the legs to be a monopod de...

Erm, because it doesn't? The monopod helps you in those two situations, maybe in one or two obscure ways I can't think of at the moment. Okay in all seriousness the monopod makes a better weapon to defend yourself with. But it just doesn't do anything beyond that.

It won't take 10s exposures, for example. Not sharp ones anyway. It won't give you properly registered multiple exposures. As such it won't allow you to do proper hdr. It won't allow you to shoot down low.

Not sure if you have a fundamental misconception of what a monopod is or not but...

A monopod is NOT a tripod with 1 leg. A monopod cannot stand on its own and requires a photographer to hold it steady. The only thing it stops is up-down movement and if the photographer is not steady enough, it will still sway from side to side resulting in VERY blur photos especially when you are shooting with long shutter times.

Since u are in a dilemma on which to get why not get this M1004 from Sirui which is a tripod with a option to remove one of the legs and double up as a monopod..

If u ask me, Tripod. Monopod primarily is meant for heavy tele lens.. its usage have limits..
