Hi,

Am new here...

Thinking of getting some gear; e.g. Canon 5D kit and lenses.

Canon recommended its stockist Edison Electronics at Sim Lim.

Prices seem damn good.

Anyone tried? Any feedback?

Thanks in advance!

:)

now i highly recommend newbies ask this is the type of question before going shopping for photo gears.

sorry, no experience shopping there.

but so far, i go to the usual TCW, Cathay, MS, John3:16, Alex Photos & CS for shopping. though from time to time u see csers complain about them, but nobody can satisfy everyone everytime, thats fact of life.

I've shopped there a couple of times before. Not a bad place it's on the first floor. There is this guy with a crew cut (can't remember his name) friendly and knows his stuff plus give good discount. I would recommend this place

just make sure you know what you are buying and how much it actually costs
don't be persuaded to buy anything else at 10X the actual cost

do your homework first before parting with your hard earned cash

eg: the camera price you know and is cheaper than others by $10
but the filter that they con you to buy is $100 more expansive than others
so altogether the stuff that you buy is $90 more

yep. a good rough guide would be to check out the pricelists that we have. its a good guide.

next, if ur first time buying, see if u have any friends who are old photographers who frequent a certain shop. i was lucky to have a relative who is old photographer. so end up i buy liao is the price csers get + the shop absorb the 7% gst.

Ditto what Ortega said, plus I would add that it seems that ONLY Orient Photo on the 6th floor have AUTHENTIC fixed prices. Some regulars may get a very small discount after very hard haggling, but in general the prices are fixed and apply to everyone.

Sim Lim Square is only for the very knowledgeable, experienced and street smart shopper.

reminds me of a old thread. sim lim mall as the chopping board.
LOL

even if we were
very knowledgeable, experienced and street smart shopper
i personally find it hard to get good prices. a reliable shop is more important than the price i believe. simlim MAY offer u a set at cheaper price. but if u dunno the terms well, u might end up with a gray set. and if things happens u will really really go crazy.

reliable shop at the end of day will still be there. got problem can ask for assistance. buying camera is a long term investment!

On the whole, with very fierce competition, other shops around Singapore also offer competitive pricing. You still hear of current reports of folks kenar chop head at Sim Lim and certain stores at Funan.

My advise (to a new equipment shopper) would be pay a little more for the peace of mind and knowledge that you're dealing with an ethical and reliable store - preferably one which practice genuinely fixed pricing.

Or do LOTS of research/reading and wait a bit. Many people are excited and probably a little anxious when they're rushing to get a new camera, lens or flash. That emotional state clouds the mind and the only thing that helps is well-researched foreknowledge.

Or take a knowledgeable pai lang friend along.

I think in Singapore, there are few places you can shop that you can claim 100% safe unless you know your pricing beforehand. You'll most likely be convinced (or at least they will try) into buying a filter to "protect your lens", buying extended warranty because "many cameras spoil after the 1st year" or extra battery because "this one cannot take many shots" and so on. Just remember 1 thing, there is NOTHING that you NEED to buy at purchase time, you can always go home and consider and do your research despite their recommendations. Can't stress this enough, never buy anything camera related without first knowing the street price, even if its a dirt cheap $20 filter. It might turn out to be totally crap and you'll have a 20$ worthless piece of glass.

and of course.. just like what others mentioned... do your home work first.. cheers...

k how much was offered to u? its better if u tell us their quote first.

Hi all,

Thanks for your feedback... :)

This weekend, I did my sums at a few shops that are mentioned in the forum and adding, then averaging all up, nett-nett all about the same price for the 50D kit, give or take a few dollars.

Edison is so cheap only because after the the quoted price, they add the 7% GST, then add another "5% for credit card installment transactions".

So, CP actually is selling cheaper for the same thing! Think I'll go to CP... Used to get all my gear there when I was in school.

And allenleonhart, no lah, I'm not a new-new photographer. I'm getting back in the game after a loooooong break. :)

It's my first time on ClubSNAP though.

Again, thanks all for your advice. I think I feel better sticking with CP for its reputation and the great recommendations and advice from everyone! ;)
