Auto Focus Canon 450D

Hey guys, I am new to DSLR Camera.

I am not sure if my auto focus is working properly as i have purchase a 2nd hand DSLR camera.

Would like to find out how the auto focus works. What are the characteristic (what are things you will spot) when auto focus is enabled on the camera.. It would be glad if you experts out there could help me.

[1] Turn your lens to manual focus (For lenses with Full-time manual, you can skip this step),
[2] Turn the focus ring until you see your objects in the viewfinder turns completely blur.
[3] Turn your lens back to auto focus.
[4] Now try to focus (half-press shutter if you are using the default settings) and see if the objects in the viewfinder becomes clear. If so, the auto focus should be working.

you attach a lens (i suppose it comes with it), put the lens on AF, look through the viewfinder, half press the shutter. do you see the scene becoming clearer?

Okay, Thank you! I will try it later. Anyway, how do you know if the lens is spoilt and auto focus is not working? Perhaps in the future i could determine it myself or something

Erm. Kinda logical, isn't it? It would be when HTCahHTC's steps don't work.

Just purely logically thinking, using some common sense, if you half-press the shutter and your AF is not working (and the switch on the lens is set to AF) then logically there's an issue, right? And if you want to know if it's the lens or the body, try with a different lens.

But don't try to test focus on an object right in front of the lens, you need to factor in the MFD too.

Read the manual about preselecting AF points. Also verify that you are NOT in AI Servo, in this mode there is no AF confirmation. Use One Shot or AI Focus.

hm, okay. i tried yesterday. is it recommended for beginners to start off with AV mode? Anyway, some pictures i took tend to be quite blur? what are the possible causes and how do i take better quality picture. Please advice.

Yes. There is a red focusing point in the centre and on goes the beep sound. I think the auto focus is working bah after rectifying all the pointers that you ; experts gave. Now there's a problem of blur (lousy quality) pictures. Any ways to improve on the quality? Is it the settings, my posture of standing or is it my own cause? I am currently using AV mode to snap pics.

If you know nuts about ur camera you shd start with P mode, and pls read the manual on how to use your camera. Next, go read up on the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

There are 1001 reasons why a picture can be blur, from lens to body to person behind viewfinder. Post a picture with EXIF intact so we can help you

shooting mode like Av or Tv or M or P does not cause an image to be sharp/unsharp

It is recommended for the beginners to read the manual and read additional guidelines. (Do you see the link on top of Newbies Corner, pointing to Articles and Guides?) Each mode of the camera has it's purpose and requires your thinking and input. The 450D has either scenic modes (similar to many PnS cams, just select accordingly) or Auto and Program Mode (P) in case you want to leave up everything to the camera. Some people start with scenic modes and just observe what the camera is doing. Others read books (NLB has plenty and the basics of photography are independent from any camera brand). Some others take courses, links are also given here in the forum.
We are also blur with regards to your pictures, there are many factors that can cause blur pictures. Describe what you have done, post the picture (including exif data!) and maybe we can help you.
