Does a local iPhone 3GS works with a foreign SIM card?

Not sure if anyone knows, I can't seem to find an answer for this.

I just purchased a unactivated iPhone 3GS locally. Does anyone knows if I can activate it with a SIM card from Europe and use it?

Or can I put in my local Starhub SIM card to activate it first, and change it to my SIM card from Europe when I'm there?

Will appreciate input from anyone with similar experiences.

It should work; I've brought my phone overseas and used their SIM card (U.S. was the furthest), though they aren't iphones. However, you'll be paying for roaming charges for GPS, I assume. Or maybe they won't work. But your phone will still work.

I'm not sure whether Europe requires a tri-band phone, but I think the iphone should support that.

I ever use my iphone 3Gs in East Malaysia using a Maxis prepaid card. It works.

Just insert the foreign SIM card into the phone, and it'll detect the appropriate service provider.

The phone function of the iphone will work as long as you insert a valid SIM card. If you want to use the other function of the iphone, then you need to activate using itune.

I think TS is asking if our Local (Singapore) iphone are locked to the respective service provider only. My boss had the 1st gen iphone from US and need to get it unlocked.


My set (iphone 3Gs from Singtel) is not locked.. tested

Thanks for all the input. I have activated the 3GS with my Starhub SIM, and inserted the Europe SIM. It seems to work, except that it is asking for the pin of the Europe SIM...which I need to find out what it is.
