When and how to clean the sensor inside the body ?

Hi folks,

I'm a newbie about cleaning my dslr sensor .

Right now i've Canon EOS 500D Body , and i want to know when usually people do the cleaning ? is it after 1 years or may found there is blank spot in the image ? And how to clean the sensor ?

When you realised you have spots on your image, try to shoot a photo of a white ceiling or anything white at ISO 100 without your lens. If you still sees the spot, you might have something on your sensor and up to you if you can live with it or clean.

Initial cleaning is to select sensor cleaning. This will expose the sensor. Tilt it down and use a blower to blow off the stuff on your sensor. Then check again using the ablove method.

If the spot still stay there, there is 2 choice to make here
1. Send to CSC (safest method)
2. Use a sensor swap and solution (please google this and don't ask how to use it here. DO SOME HOMEWORK)

Usually all sensors definitely will have some dusts on them and will be even more evident when u shoot at smaller apertures. For me i will usually clean it by using the sensor cleaning function in the menu and use a blower to forcefully blow on the sensor to dislodge any loose dusts.

For those stubborn ones have to send it back to the service center and usually i'll do it if i can't get rid of the spots at around f/8 onwards.

The sensor cleaning option is available in newer Nikon cameras, but not, I believe, the D80. For that you can hold/lock the shutter open on the bulb setting, but make sure you have enough battery (if your battery goes flat the shutter will close), and if you don't have a lock make sure the shutter stays open, otherwise in both instances the shutter or mirror could be damaged by whatever you're using to clean.

To answer the original question; I used to use sensor swabs like everyone else but I found them very hit and miss and primarily expensive, if not as expensive as sending it in. I'm not sure if you can get loose bundles in Singapore because if you can't then buying a dozen swabs and solution is going to set you back a lot (and more than a single service). In all honesty there are repair centres in the UK that if you send a dirty sensor in for cleaning can return it in a worse condition.

i have tried to blow the dust specks off on the sensor using the mirror lock-up method but they are proving to be extremely persistant and wont be moved easily :/
