Hi people,

I need advise on whether or nt shld i change my lens for my D200.. I have its kit lens 18-70mm but i'm thinking whether shld i change to a 18-200mm lens.. Please advise.. Thanks..:)

Got money then buy

18-70 lens is commendable value-for-money walkabout lens. 18-200 lens is usually popular as a all-in-one travel lens with built-in vibration reduction.

Hence, one need determine one's need and intention before deciding on 18-200 lens.

is your 18-70mm restricting in anyway? if the kit lens is doing fine for you den like what rodel said. got money den buy.

you must know the reason for getting a new lens.

thanks for the reponses.. the lens is kinda restricting me from taking a close-up shot if i'm taking for events as i've to be veri close to that person in order to take a shot..

For situation with sufficient daylights, longer zoom lens are suited for this task including 18-200 or 70-300. For situation under low light, longer zoom lens with big aperture opening maybe necessary.

You may start to consider what is the suitable lens to walk around with by renting the lens from rental shops and decide after the test runs. :)

According the specs the minimum focus distance is 38cm. How close do you intend to get to a person? Don't give them any discomfort :)

I think he means focal length rather than MFD. ;)

your ans is there already.. if you see a need, go buy a 2nd hand and tryout if you are not happy with it can sell away without much loss :)

normally its quite hard to take photos during low lighting if i were to take a close up shot of a person maybe during functions and stuffs.. If nt which range of zoom lens is recommanded? Perhaps could consider getting it instead of selling the kit lens..

Are you saying that you want a fast telephoto lens (eg >100mm)?
I don't think 18-200 would satisfy your requirements in this case, don't you think?

If you want fast (i.e. f/2.8 or less) and not terribly expensive (compared to constant-aperture zooms, for example), you have to start looking at prime lenses.

For low light you need a fast lens. f/2.8 or faster.

You mention about close up, I think what you mean is from where you normally position yourself, you are missing the 'reach' to get a close up? Because your kit lens is wide enough to go closer.

Based on what you described, it would seemed 70-200 VR or 70-200 VR2 is more suitable.

I have the 18-200 VR (version 1) and I am telling you in weddings, it does have enough reach but not fast enough. I have to crank up the ISO to above 1600 at times and it makes the photo too grainy for my liking. If I stick to ISO 800, the lighting conditions, the shutter speed can be 1/4 to 1/20 and even with VR, there will be camera shake (at least for me).

For 17-55 f/2.8, ISO 800 is ok but I don't have the reach because I am not AD photographer so I usually shoot from my seat...

I tried the 70-300 VR before and it performs like the 18-200 VR except it has more reach. But more focal length also means you need a faster shutter speed to prevent camera shake.

I am of course assuming you don't use external flash.

Since you already have an 18-70, it makes sense to complement it with a 70-300 VR.

for convi, 18-200 is a good lens.

the 18-200 is certainly convenient, but I think not appropriate in this case.
the TS mentioned low lighting condition, and struggling to get good shots with the 18-70 f/3.5-4.5, so I think having a faster lens would help.

Don't know if something like the 85/1.8 would be enough reach for the TS.

if u use 200mm setting at event with ur 18-200mm, chances are with so many people moving around, some head will block the lens path... moving closer is better to land more shoots... my personal experience, or the lack of it...

points taken with many thanks..;)

can get a 70-200 f2.8 VRII to suit ur needs, better low light, zoom range & IQ.
Since u never mention budget..

why not get a complementary lens

superzooms are fine for convenience, but as lenses go, they are limited in many ways.
