well this is the time where u need to decide and think very carefully because once you have decided its very hard to turn back. I prefer nikon films and canon digitals.. but thats me.

actually what you need to consider is your lens line ups. Don't worry too much about the body. worry about the lenses that you can stick with them..

evaluate the lenses inside and out canon or nikon then decide from there.

if you like nikon then start with d300s or if you like canon then start with 50D.

i dont know with nikon but canon 50D will cost you around 1500-1700 for the body.. I'm not so sure anymore about the current up to date price.

for DSLR they are being categorized by consumers as the ffg:

Entry Level - ex: 400d, 500d, 450d
Semi Pro - 40D, 50D, 7D (sorry but i don't consider 7d as pro)
Professional - 5D and 1d series.

for nikon i dont know how they categorize it.

i think you just go by canon. :)

for me nikon has been eaten alive by canon during these digital era. (this is just me)

its just a matter of preference. nikon or canon are both great but i like canon. ehehe

to get you started read this:

Your question pops up about once a day. PLEASE TRY TRY TRY A SEARCH!!! But to put it simply... You seem to know nuts about DSLR cameras. You haven't stated a budget, you haven't stated what cameras you have looked at so far, what basic research you have done.

Please go to a shop first, do some research, actually try holding the cameras in your hand, see which feels good and fits your budget. Narrow it down to 3-5 that you like a lot (make sure to check out other brands too) and then do some research to compare them against each other.

Hello, laposto.
Pardon if I point out..
Originally I also thought that 5D series is a pro series, until I have been advised otherwise by many a senior and experienced photographers that only the 1D series is professional.

wow a nikon user.

well... i don't look at figures though but i think this is very very hard to believe and close to IMPOSSIBLE. never in a point in the digital era that NIKON came close to CANON in 3 years in a row when it comes to sales. in the film days i might agree..

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Nikon-and-Canon-Report-Increased-Quarterly-Sales.htm

if you have an iphone just go to stocks and see the difference :)

with sales or not.. even canon wont sell a single camera i am still with canon and will die with canon. :)

there are canon 1d series models that are not full frame. for me sensor is IQ and IQ is quality image and bigger print. so just do the math... would you think pro photographers will use low IQ? they might use it in sports because of the crop nonetheless why do you think Ansel Adams uses large format and medium format? it is because the format speaks it self.. large format means large film meaning large sensor.. and large sensor will produce large print and superb quality. 1d is now nothing compared to 5d.. body yes i can say its much more weather sealed than 5d but image quality?? ill chop my head if 1d can beat 5d in terms of image quality.

for canon.. they don't put pop up flashes for professional cameras. so if you see a DSLR camera from canon and it has pop up i doubt its not pro. :)

ok this is the more safer way to say it.

5D is a professional camera when it comes to image quality but semi pro when it comes to body weather sealing :)

ehehe

cheers!

yes,, Rashkae is correct. :)

for me:

whenever i want something especially when its expensive.. i try research first online. then ask the people who are using it what are the pros and cons.. i go to the shop and check it. hold it feel it and sometimes even smell it  and most of the time i wont buy it that day..

i need to go to other shops and see their prices and talk to more people.
after narrowing down shops and prices. then i will check second hands ehehehe
if there is a unit that is mint and still warranted with slightly lower price then ill go with the second hand :) else bnew. but thats me.

Yes, I agree that this is perhaps a better and safer way of saying it.

please read the forum guidelines about posting such threads without doing prior search.

i agree with laposto....

dont most pple do that? whenever i wan to get some new 'toy', first thing i do is to hit the internet, join forum etc. spend hours staring at the computer screen researching, spending money getting related magazines and read up.

i even go to the extend of surfing youtube for the 'toy' i wan to get. (reviews, pro's advice etc)

lie012: firstly, you need to know what you want. good thing is that you have decided on the brand. next, how interested are you? if you think you are serious about photography, maybe you would wan to get something advanced. (this is me. i prefer going straight into something mid range so can dont upgrade so fast.) but on the other hand, if you think u are just curious abt this, maybe renting or borrow from a friend to try it out first.

these 'toys' dun come cheap. really think about it. there are plenty of good and informative websites in this forum. do a search.

many here in this forum are really helpful people. dun get dishearten when receiving negative comments and replies. put in some effort and great help will come flooding!

hope you get yourself an answer soon. cheers buddy!

New person as in New kid on the block? In Chinese, a straight translation "新人" as newbie.

Errmm actually, he is an alpha user...

not everything is N and C.

And your news link is 3 years old. That is an eternity in the business world.

And do note that Canon has a huge customer base in PnS compared to Nikon. Those may tip some reports in Canon's favor.

And looking at stock price or market cap of a company has no bearing on performance of sales on a single division or segment. I really hope you understand that if you are doing any sort of investing in equity.

And what about these news?
http://www.photoscala.de/Artikel/DSLR-Welt-im-Wandel
http://www.photographyblog.com/news/dslr_market_shares_gainers_losers/
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08011105japansales.asp

The market is growing, meaning everyone's sales are growing. But market share wise, Canon's market share has dropped quite a bit. Canon's and Nikon's market share are almost equal in 2008. As 2009 numbers come out in a couple of months, we will see if Canon can still maintain that 1% lead. Hard to say since Nikon's D90 and D5000 were quite a hit with consumers. P.S. I call 1-3% close, don't you?

I know you are a Canon fanboy and all, but do open your eyes from time to time. Every system has its pros and cons. A user of a system is just another photographer. Nothing more, nothing less.

I maybe wrong with the figures as i dont check them all the time as i mentioned.

yes i know its not a matter of system. and i dont say that canon quality is better than nikon and the other way around.

well alpha or not it does not take away my entitlement to say my own opinion right?
just like what i've said... with sales or not i will die with a canon in my hand.

there is so many reason i say that. first of all i am not rich and i could not afford
to buy a new line up of system again. secondly i know my system very well.
i know when it will underexpose or over expose in lenses that i stick.

well i guess you hit that right. this debate will never end but its a healthy discussion that can open each others eyes.

i have opened my eyes that is why i realized that i got no choice but to die with a canon system.

and btw: about the eternity of 3 years in the business world? thats why they have point and shoot. just take a look at Apple Inc. how many years in a row do you think apple is being eaten alive by PC.

thanks to ipod and iphone they got their shares back :)

keep coming.. its a good discussion especially for those who are in the midst of deciding what brand to buy.

maybe we can talk about their body quality and lenses availability and precision.

nikon or canon?

i prefer nikon films and canon digis. i know this because when i was doing some BW way back in the 90s
for some reason nikon has a good edge when it comes to film shooting. though i like my canon range finder.
i just find nikon film cameras to be edgy. anyone notice that FM under TMAX is better than canon RF on a TMAX?
you can see the grains when you develop they are a bit smother in FM..

aha no lah..:embrass:

this is just a very healthy discussion.. forum is nothing without a discussion. forum with such good discussion and good open minded opinion means we will learn a lot with every participants opinion. nothing personal and no heart feelings.

but i still love canon ehehe ;p
