You have not stated your budget, your needs, what features you most seek in a DSLR.
You haven't even explained why you need a DSLR in the first place. Maybe you shouldn't get one until you know what you need it for, and are aware of the peripheral costs?
DSLR does not automatically make you a photographer.
If at this point you're so "blur" that you can't even list DSLRs that have caught your eye, you have *years* to go.
So, 3k. Including lenses? What lenses? What area of photography are you venturing into? sports? Nature? Landscape? Architecture? Studio shoots? Outdoor portraits? Macro? Product shots? Child photography? Event photography? News Journalism?
If you don't even know what you will be doing, or what aspect of photography you want to get into, that's $3,000 that you are flushing down the toilet.
Know what you need first.
Otherwise, just get a cheap entry-level DSLR (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax and Olympus make good ones) and use that for 1-2 years first until you know what you want to specialize in.
Never, EVER, walk into a shop or even a forum and say "I have $3k to spend, tell me what to buy". Everyone will tell you something else, everyone will recommend you what *they* would buy for *their* needs. It's YOUR money and YOU will be using it, you really need to do some homework first.
The classic you want to become an autobot or the decepticon in transformer; the photographer or the camera man.

What Rashkae mentioned is sooooo true. If u can come into a forum and just say oh i have a 3k budget pls tell me what i should buy then u r either gonna get alot of sarcastic remarks or a bunch of suggestions that wouldn't actually suit yr needs. What area are u going to focus on? Have you gone to any camera shops and tested any of the DSLRs?? What are your reasons for wanting to be a photographer(you said you wanted to be a photographer and nothing about wanting to learn photography)
From how it sounds, seriously i think it would be better if u start of with something simple and see if this really suit you rather then just diving into something u are unsure of and regretting later. Owning a DSLR is not like getting a toy. IT'S A COMMITTMENT!!! hahahaha:bsmilie:

srsly i ttly agree with the others.
1. decide why you want do it
2. decide what you want to do with it
3. decide what you need
4. find out about the options
5. test them from friends/ shop
6. buy
alternatively you can try taking out a compact camera and filling your bag with 4kg of water and walking around singapore for a day, and make sure you take at least a dozen 'keepers'. cos that's kinda what lugging a dslr with lots of kit about is gg to be like ^^

You should not just jump onto the boat when you dun even know where it is heading.. Ask yourself first why do u need a DSLR and what do you need to use it for? With that thought, go to the stores and test out the cameras to use which one you like then read up their review online then ask for other opinions

First let me be clear about myself. Me a newbie too not some expert or master. And I think I will share with you what a newbie like me was thinking.
Second, I think your big headache is not on what to chose (atleast not the big part of it.) but which way you are heading to, with your new gear. Like myself, When I first lay my hand on my prosumer H50, I start to fall "in love" with photographing. Than about a year later, the lens and flash is starting to become a contraint factor for me. And it was during this time that I found out I like Nite landscape & portrait shot more than other shooting.
Therefore I venture into this DSLR field and got myself a D90 (with 18-105 kit), a 50mm, a 35mm & a SB600 to start off with.
I feels D90 is a nice to hold camera (including button layout and reach of all button) compare to 500D at my time of purchase. (I narrowed down my choice to C or N only).
I need the 50mm mainly for my portrait shot and the 35mm mainly for nite landscape, although I do use 35mm for portrait too. I prefer prime lens at this moment. And a decent external flash is important for my portrait so i got a sb600.
No zoom lens I owned other than the kit lens and it did cover 90% of what i am shooting most of the time.
Allow me to voice my humble advise.
Maybe you can start off with a prosumer or budget DSLR first to understand yourself more in relation to photographing. That might lay a clearer path for you down the road to spend wisely on what you should get. And I belive by that time, you wouldn't be asking what you are asking now.
