Hi all, i am new to photograph and this clubsnap. I own an canon 500d with EF18-55 IS kit lens and recently (2days) brought a efs 50mm f/1.8 II.

Would like to seek advise on the lens suitable for holiday. Budget below $1k, anything from 17-135mm with normal f/stop like 4-5.6 for example. Will like to do photoshot of ppl n background during holiday.

Are considering canon lens(kindly give me some suggestion pls), best with IS because i want to take night shot and prolly equip myself with a tripod. Am i able to get an L lens with my budget?

Canon just released a 15-85, might be an option for you.

The 18-55 kit lens seems well suited for the job at hand (ie. the 'been there' photos; otherwise known as environmental portraits)

If you need more reach on a budget, then consider a 55-200 or 70-200.

First of all, welcome to CS~
IMO, the kit lens is already good enough to meet your needs. All you need is a tripod and you're good to go. You can also consider the 55-250 which will also cover the telephoto end.
L lens for less than $1k is near impossible, esp when you want the IS function. :nono:
Check the B&S section, you might find something you want.

Maybe the "all-in-one" lens, 18-200mm or 18-250mm lens?
The focal length can do landscapes, portraits, close-ups etc.

That is within your budget.
But I'm not sure how are the results like.. :dunno:

For a start just use your kit lens and add 55-250 for tele end..... good enough for your holiday

Don't think too much on the gear, spend your time more to improve shooting

Hi guys, thank for all the reply.

I am considering between EF28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and EF S55-250 f/4-5.6 IS. $500-800 range I guess.

I have research on that USM thingy and to my understanding it's just a focus motor that can focus more accurate compare to normal motor. correct me if I am wrong.

if I use the EF 28-135, do I still need to bring my 18-55 kit lens? I am trying to cut down on the lens I bring for holiday. Just hope to bring a standard zoom lens and my 50mm f1.8 prime lens. my 18-55 come with an Vitacom wide angle 0.45x add on. can the vitacom use on 28-135 lens? how do I know existing vitacom lens (I am not sure what to call it, extender or wide angle conveter?) suit or can be screwed onto the new lens I am buying?

I have bring the camera and 18-55 lens (with vitacom) with me to Paris, London and milan. The result of my night photographing is disappointed. my mistake of not bring my Tripod. From now onward I will bring tripod to holiday.

I can't even take effiel tower clearly without a tripod at night. blame it on my photo skill and the missing tripod, all my night shot are blur and I only notice that when I am back in singapore.

I guess nothing can be done to correct the blurness using software/program. Can photoshop help to retify it?

28-135 is not wide enough on a crop body so I would not recommend that.

The best combi would be to use your 18-55 + 55-250 combi plus 50mm. You can get a 55-250 at about $400 new or $300 used.

For night shots, maybe an external flash unit or a tripod would be better than IS

I'm blur on this wide angle term, I have check the Canon Lens Work III book and in the book it's classify a EF 35mm f/2 as wide angle lens. So if an 35mm consider a wide andgle lense, why would an 28mm not wide enough. I am not questioning/agues what you said, just that I am puzzled by the term, hope u understand. hope u can enlighten me on this kind of noob question.

1) What is an wide angle lens? what distance can consider wide angle?

2) Does that mean zoom out all the way to get the more view into the picture on the left and right side is consider an wide angle photographing?

3) wide angle lens with smaller focus lenght also mean that it's can more image into the photo but at a small scale?

35 is considered WA on full frame format.

Your cam is with 1.6x cropped factor, therefore the FOV = 35 x 1.6 = 56 is no longer considered WA

ya, I have been trying to do the reading and that why I came out with those lens I am interested to get. But as a newbie, I am sad to say that even I read up there alway a limit to the understand. haha...newbie problem.

The strange things is that some higher-end camera also got 1.6X crop factor. hmm...checking canon camera spec one by one to find out now and most model dont put the crop factor (maybe it's my that dunno how to look for it ).

In low light situation the F2.8 is very helpful plus you get better bokeh with F2.8, it depends on what you shoot. Some people get the Tamron solely for the F2.8 - I know I did and I would not trade it for the 17-85 USM even if I had the choice.

Erm. You already listed the differences yourself, what more do you want people to do for you??

As for picture quality, it's hard to compare since the focal ranges only overlap at exactly 55mm.

Read the reviews of the lenses in the links that were already provided to you, and learn for yourself.
