question about memory cards

Hihi,i have went around looking at the prices of memory cards for my canon 500d.i realise that the 32gb is so much more expensive than 4 pieces of 8gb memory card.can you guys advise me whether its better to buy 4 pieces of 8gb memory or buy 1 32gb memory?if possible,do share with me why.thanks

I would prefer 4 piece.. i assume one piece 32 gb will be slower than one piece 8gb? not too sure I'm right or not. But the main reason I like to buy smaller one is because at least if I lose one, i wont lose all..

If you're working jobs which does not allow you the time to change memory cards, then get a bigger card.

But most of the time, we do have the time to change the cards at our convenience. So having more cards is a safety factor, not all the eggs are in the same basket.

Well said. I think the same too.
If u shoot jpeg all the time, it'll take some time to fill up a 8GB card.

Personally, 4 pieces = security reasons

But if you do intend to take video, then I guess bigger card is more useful

I would go for 4 pcs of 8GB. That way, its easier to search for certain shots or projects rather than go through the whole 32GB card, which will take ages

I guess 8GB is the sweet spot in terms of prices.
It is cheaper to get 1 piece of 8GB than 2 pieces of 4GB
It is also cheaper to get 2 pieces of 8GB than 1 piece of 16GB.
Correct me if i am wrong.

Actually... bigger cards is pretty useless for video taking... I'll explain why.
I tried to take a 2 hour performance sometime back using my 500D.

It's a continuous show.. and I debated a long time whether i need a 32gb or 2x16gb card.

After I took 1 hour of video, my camera heated up and the "temperature" icon lit up.
I got no choice but to rest the camera for 10 mins b4 continuing.
So.. having a 32gb card is pretty useless anyway... since u cannot take 2 hours or more video at a single go...

Then again.. i"m using 500D... I dunno if other video capable 1Ds or 1D will overheat too...

Was this an day time outdoor event? Just curious as to what ambient tempatures you were shooting video in.

It is more practical to have 4x 8GB than having 1 32GB. Unless you are taking alot videos then you should take a 32GB.

But my question is, do you need 32GB for photos? FYI D700/300 large size normal quality give you approximate 2200 shot for a 8GB card. I dont think any armature shooter will be shooting like ~9000 photos for an event or overseas trip. The most important factor here is cost, memory card price depreciate at amazing speed. Remember when time of a 512 MB thumbdrive cost $60 (2006)? Now a 8GB thumbdrive can be found at $25(2009). So my advise, buy what you need esp for memory card.

Sorry to dig this thread out but as i just upgrded to 50d,i needed to change my mem card as it uses compact flash instead.i notice its cheaper to buy for example one 16gb than 2 8gb,same for cheaper to buy 1 32gb than 2 16gb,whatwould u guys choose and may i know why?i dun know which to buy.

I would recommend you to get multiple smaller cards. Reason being in case your memory card becomes defective or corrupted, you have extra cards on standby which us readily available.

Yup, tt'z rite. It also takes shorter time to transfer to ur comp if y hv lots of pictures. Furthermore, u can label different cards for different shoots. No nid to go thru 31 GB of shots to view what u want to view.
