Other brand lenses for Nikon D5000

Hi! All. Just got my Nikon D5000 with 18-55mm lenses. Was wondering if i want to get other lenses in the future, are there other lense brands that i can choose from such as Tamron or lenses from Canon or Sony. Are DSLR lenses interchangeable amongst brands. Eg. A Nikon DSLR can use Canon, Sony, etc lenses?

How do i know if the lense i want to invest in is compatible with my camera? Sorry if these questions sound stupid but i really a noob in DSLR. Would appreciate guidance from the pros here.

anything that is a Nikon F mount is compatible. However, AF and metering wise is a different case. AF depends on the lens if it has a built in motor, metering depends from case to case.

Canon and Sony lenses wont work.

Thx for the reply. So u mean to say that with or without built in motor & metering is not really crucial but whether the lens is F mount. So what 3rd party lenses is compatible? Eg. i planning to invest in a ultra zoom lense. Scouted online & found that Tamron has the following models that offer great zoom but not sure if it is compatible with D5000. Besides these, are there any other brands that are compatible.

D5000 needs lenses with built in motor to acquire AF (Nikon AF-S, Sigma HSM etc..)
Tamron 18-250 comes in 2 versions.. only A18NII version will auto focus on 5000D..
Tamron 18-270 VC will AF on 5000D since it has built in motor already..
Sigma 18-250 HSM OS is another third party ultra zoom available..

compatible propably means "has same functions as the kit lens"

Am not so sure about metering etc. I think it should not be a problem with the 3rd party lenses that have been released to the market within the past few years.
As for auto-focus... The D5000 does not have a built-in focusing motor on the camera body (unlike the higher-models). Nikon (and 3rd party manufacturers) make many many lenses that can auto-focus, but need to be driven by the body's AF motor, through a screw contact.
These lenses are off your list if auto-focus is a requirement for you.
A lot of the lenses generally get updated over time with built-in motor for Nikon entry models.
For example, the Tamron 17-50 has been updated a few times. The Nikon-mount version now has a motor in-built.

In general for you as a newbie take it that only Nikon lenses (either manufactured by Nikon or having an F mount) are suitable for your camera. All other lenses are not suitable. Some can be mounted using adapters, though. But this is combined with a loss of function (AF, metering) or other issues.
When using F mount lenses you need to make sure that they have a built-in AF motor (check the lens descriptions carefully) since the D5000 doesn't have AF motor in the body.
