Hi, i am going to have some dinners coming this few weeks.
just need to check which of my lens is better to use on this type of occasions.
currently i owning 18-200 VR , 35mm and 11-16mm wide angle lens.
is it ok if i just bring the 11-16mm??

u definitely need a flash..;)

Bring all three, should not be that heavy right.

I'd just use the 35 mm if that's my setup.

Either large aperture lenses and boost ISO, or stick with your standard zooms and use a flash.

For group shots, you will usually need to do the later.

i see. so means use 18-200 with SB600 should be sufficient.
maybe i just bring along 35mm. and leave the wide angle at home ..

you probably need the wide lens for group photo esp when space is a constraint

To be honest TS' 18-200 is more than wide enough...

If i faced a situation where i need to use 11-16 to shoot a groupshot, i'd rather relocate the group as it is going to distort people at the sides... the women will not be happy. :bsmilie:

think i just leave wide angle at home in this case.
the group wont be huge enough to use that i think.
thanks for all advices. ;)

i would say, bring the lens u are most familier and comfortable to use. Best option i agree is bring all three! it ain't heavy! it is your camera gear!

On the contrary, i feel wedding or dinner snapshots could be fantastic using the 35 f1.8 without flash. Especially when you're not the main photographer.

true that in Wedding occasion, i am not the Main photographer.
so i might just bring 18-200 without flash so i can zoom from my table to stage.
just want to get familiar with the settings in this type of occasions.

as for dinners with relatives or colleagues, i got a feeling that i will be the one using DSLR. so i better equip with flash and some fast lens. and maybe tripod for group photos.

It depends on shooting style in a way, so I'm wrong to recommend an exclusion of the 35/1.8. Hahaha.
If it's not to cover general photos in an event (eg. group shots at table, etc), then usually I prefer a bit of telephoto for candids.

My choices for a DX setup would be:
17-55 f/2.8 for most shots
85/1.8 or 85/1.4 for candids (close-ups)

35mm f1.8 might not be fast enough. FYI. Flash is a must. Unless your body is D700 or D3(/x/s) that has good noise control at high ISO.

Are you the guest? Not the main photographer right? Using flash might 'affect' his/her work. If you are just taking your table, should be ok.

Take note of when the main photographer is shooting and everything should be fine

IMO, your 18-200 and 35mm should be enuff. You mentioned you going to be shooting from the table to the stage? So I'm assuming that you are just a guest and not like the secondary photog or something yah? If tht's the case, better not use your flash.... my affect the main photog... i encountered something like this before... one of the guest brought her dslr together with external flash and whenever it fired it affected some of my shots.... really annoying...

Just push yr iso up then shouldn't be a prob.

If f/1.8 is not fast enough then what is?
