hi guys!

i just came from a photoshoot from our church....

now i cleaned my dslr particularly the filter....i used the nikon cleaning fluid on it....i swab it front and back....but when i rub it a cleaning cloth (still from Nikon), strange smears or light scratches appear on my Kenko Pro1D UV filter already.....

does this mean i mishandled and spoiled my filter already?

do you ever clean your filter? how do you clean it especially the Kenko Pro1D UV filter?


pls guys...i really need help on this....im still a newbie.....in cleaning.....

Has been covered MANY times in CS.

When you swab with cleaning fluid, use a high quality lens tissue, or pec pad. NOT microfiber cloth (since you don't know if the MF is coated in any way, and if the solution contains any chemicals that might dissolve the coatings).

Swab ONCE, in ONE direction, LIFT, then use a clean part of the tissue. Discard.

Take a NEW piece of tissue/pecpad and very gently WIPE ONCE, in ONE DIRECTION ONLY, LIFT, then turn to clean side and repeat.

DISCARD.

If cleaning streaks persist, gently fog up the glass surface with your breath (make sure mouth is clean, and not after eating char kway teow or something) and very quickly, and gently, wipe with a clean piece of lens tissue or microfiber cloth WHILE the surface is STILL FOGGED.

The KEY POINT is to NEVER RE-WIPE a surface with the used portion of the tissue/pecpad. The MOMENT it touches the glass surface, it's considered USED AND HAS DIRT, GREASE etc on it, so if you wipe and wipe and wipe in circles, all you're doing is SPREADING DA GUNK!

Also don't be alarmed - virtually all cleaning solutions leave a deposit of some kind. Hence the breath and wipe steps after cleaning with solution regime.

1. You should make sure your thread has a more relevant subject.
2. Wipe it with tissue paper/microfibre cloth. If the marks still remain, you may have damaged the filter coatings.

i tested it immediately to spot for defects....as of the moment i couldnt spot one yet on photos i've taken on a wall.....maybe because its night time....i'll try it tomorrow at midday and see furthermore...hope its just okay...otherwise my wife will crank me up for spoiling a S$30-value accessory....

i wont be looking for a new filter...i just bought it a week ago....i havent enjoyed that filter much enough for me to dispose it and buy another one....yeah...hopefully it would work this time...i'll clean it back again tomorrow...hope its just okay....otherwise i'll be discretely buying another one without my wife's knowledge.... arghhhhhh!!!! why did i ever clean it on the first place....the last time i cleaned it, it was just okay....but now its different already...i guess i might have scratched the coating why those <b>light scratches</b> appeared.....

I just use my t-shirt to wipe it off once a while :bsmilie:
The coatings are really that tough thrust me.

Yes, always use a blower 1st. A Giottos rocket blower is good. Check other thread, has been discussed what type is good.

I only use lens cleaning solution as a last resort; in actual fact I've not use any for years.

Most finger print and marks can easily be removed with a lens cleaning cloth.

Don't panic. Some appeared to be branded liquid happens to leave the worse stains just like monster liquid. Just go to hypermart and get Atake LCD cleaning liquid (small bottle, bag with a duster) and get car washing cloth.

Spray on the cloth and clean. You will need to do it a few times and keep the cloth damp. Lamb leather chamois will give the best final shine but not common on sale. You can try alternative macquarie chamois for final shine.

I think most probably it is just stain. It is not that easy to have scratches on filter and front element. But it is best that you post the picture of your filter and let us have a look on it.

okay...i'll try to take a photo of it....i cleaned it this morning but those micro scratches are still there despite i use with cleaning cloth by Nikon....i tried to take photo on a wall but didnt see any detrimental effects.
Would it have been i mess up the coating and didnt scratch it at all that's why its like this? i looked placed the filter up high on a ligt to see if there are visible scratches but its all clear. but if you happen to see by an angle on a stray light from the window, you will see those micro scratches....

for the info of everyone, i did use a blower before i swabbed it Nikon Lens liquid...i think my fault was i swabbed the back portion of the filter also, where i should have just do it in front only....does it make any difference????
