Hi ppl,

Should I get the Canon 50D with 18-200mm or 50D with 18-55mm? They appear to be about the same price right?

Should I go for a better body or a better kit lense? Please advise and many thanks.

Sorry, it's canon 500D with 18-200mm or canon 50D with 18-55mm

It really depends on your shooting style. If you are looking for a all-in-one type of lens, then 18-200mm should be the ideal one. This is a popular lens for people traveling since they don't have to carry another lens.

Sorry for the confusion, the comparison should be between Canon 500D with 18-200mm or 50D with 18-55mm? typo error in my first thread.. my apologies..

ya, as per mentioned by CS tan, it really depends on your shooting style. if you need larger focal length frequently. then getting all-in-one type 18-200 would be ideal.
as for 18-55mm, you might need to change to other lens for better effects (for e.g prime lens, tele lens, etc) if 18-55 does not satisfied you in some situations...

first of all, welcome to the club :)
why 500D 18-200 vs 50D 18-55 and not 500D 18-55?

oh, because the price of the 500D 18-200mm is about the same as the 50D 18-55mm. So since the price is about the same, should I go for the better body (i.e. 50D 18-55mm) or the better kit lense (i.e 500D 18-200mm)?

my point is given that the price is about the same (+-$100), which is a better buy?

Look at the features and see which is more important to you.

i.e. 500D has video, 50D does not.

Oh ok. But do you think the difference between a 500D and a 50D body really matters/affects what you intend to shoot?:dunno: Personally I do not think that there is a 'better' kit lens, but rather a lens that meets your requirements better.

just my 2 cents :)

As mentioned by some abv, why compare 2 diff bodies wif 2 diff lenses?
Anyway, I think it's better you get the 18-200mm lens by topping up a little more.

The tele-end will come in handy when you're shooting things like, animals in the zoo.

Actually, both choices are practical. If you get the 500D with the 18-200mm, you will know what's telephoto and you can zoom more, which is more convenient as compared to 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses.

However, if you go with the 50D, it is a semi-pro DSLR. So you might not need to change the body anytime soon. And the 18-55mm is sufficient already.

If I were you, I would take the 50D. Yeah. :)

Lens generally hope value better than body over time. I think you know my recommendation. :bsmilie:

New camera bodies come out on a pretty regular basis (subjectively speaking), while lenses don't. So yes, lenses hold their value longer.

Alternatively, do consider buying a second hand 40D. Not a great difference in the functions as compared to 50D. Price is around 900ish which is cheaper than a brand new 500D and you still have the budget to buy a better lens of your desire.

Hope this helps.

It should be a close call since both model have ard the same spec in many areas. You pay a few hundred more for higher max shuttle and higher continous drive. Actually you shoudn't worry about lens as I think they will follow you for a long time while the body might not. :)

Wow, seems that more ppl in this thread is favourable towards the 500D 18-200mm as compared to the 50D 18-55mm? Actually, all of you make very good sense. 18-200mm allows a longer focus length and value over time, while the 50D is a semi-pro which means no real need to upgrade for quite sometime.

Any more suggestions bros? all are welcome cos chances are I will be making my decision by this weekend. thanks =)

how much exactly is your budget? :)

eh, what the... 50D and you still thinking of a better body?
Those 2 lenses have diff purposes, if you want an all purpose lens for street to landscape, indoor events and portraits get the 18-200, tradeoff comes with nice vignette too! lol... on the other hand the 18-55 is awfully short ranged = portraits+landscape? Up to ur choice
but I'll even be happy to shoot with the old 20D or 30D, let alone changing

Hi bros,

Thanks for all your kind advice. Went down to CSC at Harbourfront today and bought the 500D 18-200mm at S$1,588 under the Privilege Purchase Program (PPP). The 50D is no longer offered under the PPP and so that makes the decision much easier. (This lobang is learnt from CS forum) CS rocks!! cheers =)
