i'm trying to take a survey with regards to performance of several lenses of choice. the expensive 24-70 by canon or the sigma's version or maybe the tamron 28-75 . . .is the sigma 17-70 also ok? how about its 18-50mm? im really undecided so maybe you experienced guys could help me out. budget is about 1k . . .heheheh . .dont want to spend on things i cannot maximise the use . . thanks!

Why replace your kit lens with something that replaces the exact range? Have you searched for, and read reviews? Have you narrowed your choices to 2-3 lenses? What range do you consider "walkabout"? This varies a lot from person to person.

Just do a search for "Canon walkabout lens" and you'll get results.

my kit lens autofocus gone bad . .and it's not that crisp and nice compared to other people's pics . . .

what do you mean by "gone bad"? focusing issues? motor doesn't work? keeps hunting?

Get Tamaron 17-50. It is on par with N17-55. Do some research and read up on this lens, I tried both OS and non-OS they are similar in term of quality.

what about the new version of sigma 17mm-70mm with os and hsm??

Hi I never used it before, my impression with Sigma is bad. I know im bias but there are tokina and Tamaron so why risking it even though they know their problem and giving you a 5 years warranty. If you get one, keep your warranty and keep it handy. Photocopy the receipt before the ink get faded. Sigma lens are known for focusing and skin peeling problem.

But back to comparison I cant give any conclusion but a short readup Sigma 17-70 is variable aperture 2.8-4.5 so if i will to spend money on a lens i get a fixed.
