Hi,

Planning to sell my Nikon D80 body, and change system to Pentax Kx, but with 3 Nikon lens, how can I use them onto Pentax Kx which I am planning to buy. Any suitable good adaptor that I can purchase locally or anyone with the same situation resolve this so I can learn?

I thought of getting Nikon D90, or D5000, but I prefer a lighter and cheaper model, and fren just recommended Pentax. Thanks!!!!!

You won't be able to use with AF.

Just sell them all and buy the pentax equivalents.

If you mention which specific lenses you have we can comment further.

My Nikon lens: 18-135mm that comes with the D80, I got another 55-200mm VR lens, and a Tamron 10-24mm Nikon mount.

If have to sell all, may have to go back to a Nikon D5000 rather than D90. Beyond my budget. But heard many good things about Pentax Kx.

the lenses you have do not have aperture ring. you cant control the aperture even if you manage to get an adaptor to mount on k-x.

either you sell everything and buy k-x or you buy D5000. I think D5000 is quite light weight already. And selling everything means you will lose quite a bit of money in the process. Not worth it.

to TS, why would you wan a Pentax since you already own so many Nikon Lens? D80 is still a good cam, i would think D90 is a good upgrade but not really necessary, i think you should just shoot more rather than buy more. What you don't like about Nikon? Why would your friend ask u to change to Pentax? I hope your friend is not a salesman at a camera shop, sorry but it just doesn't make sense to me. If my friend ask me the same question, i would ask him to just stick to D80 or if really die die wanna change, state the reason to change, like what you look for in a new cam that your current cam do not have, if not why waste money to change for the sake of changing?

u dun have budget to get D90 then stick with your D80 or change to D5000, if you change the whole system, it will cost u much much more and you have lesser lens choice thereafter. Nikon has a much wider range of lens selection, some may say i dun need so many but more choice is still better then "i don have a choice".

I don't think it's a very good idea to use adapter, at least for me i won't get a Nikon lens to use on my Sony, i believe using back the same mount, i dun wan to suddenly find my photos misfocus etc because i use a adapter.

Lastly may i know what are the things about Kx that you like about that Nikon can't provide you with?

Between the D80 and the D500, I would just stick to the D80.

It's not really a huge improvement, moving to the D5000/D90/Kx.

Arguably moving to the Kx is like moving to the d5000, a body downgrade coupled with a sensor upgrade .

Hi Thanks for input. My friend is a professional photographer in Taiwan, so his comments on Pentax surprised me too, because he is into Nikon. I am never into Pentax, so the first thing I thought is to post a question here.

I like to upgrade to a lighter camera for holiday trips, but don't want to sacrifice the quality of a Nikon D80. So that's one. Also, I prefer a live view, and a camera that works well in low light high ISO, and I read that the Pentax KX is a good low light camera, with photos comparison, and shows good image with smooth noise, plus the price, its something worth exploring.

More over, some say its a cheaper version of D300 or D700 according to some review, and this shock me, as said, I am so new to Pentax, that this is certainly unthinkable. But got into more review, and I am thinking, why not. But little did I know that the Nikon lens cannot work with Pentax, and which means, I have to start all over again. sigh!

seriously i'm quite surprise with your comment. D80 is not that heavy right?

its the same for every brand. once you jump ship you start all over again. so the best choice is still to stick with your nikon...

Got some health issue after surgery on my lung, and right shoulder injury, so all this adds up stress to my body. frankly, I don't even know how light is light since I have never touched a Pentax Kx, but its the lightest in its class, and I suppose this is workable for me.

i see... maybe you want to try GF1 or Pen?

yeah that is light. Maybe TS should try selling off all your stuff anf get GF1 or PEn1 since you like to like liveview and lightweight. Those are good cams too although crop factor is about 2x

don't buy into myth, there's no sensor out there that's really worth you switching systems & losing big bucks in the process. is in-camera processing really that important to you? As far as noise performance goes, k-x does not perform any better than d5000 or d90.

the top talk about k-x nowadays is it's highlight dynamic range, which i believe that is being compared to D700. this represents RAW workability. unless you post-process RAW, it's not going to give you magic output.

if you are to research in detail, not all is hunky-dory. the pitfall of the k-x is in the base ISO shooting, which in no way measures well against the semi or pro bodies offered by other manufacturers. this is a much silenced fact, which has been observed by some & independently proven by recently emerging tests.

Creamy smooth high ISO will also limit your cropping later, you'll get smudged results lacking in resolution. in such circumstances you'd wish you had more grain.

Got 2 lumix earlier model. Leica lens etc, but still not good enough. When comes to serious shooting, nothing comes close with working different lens type. so its back to quality, price. If Nikon D5000 is the logical path, then I have to forget Pentax Kx altogether. Price to price comparison not much, but Pentax Kx seems a notch higher than Nikon D5000 leh.

to jump or not to jump is your own decision my friend, you make your own choice.
i'm not telling any good / bad here ,but if you can make it this coming outing, join
us & i'm very very sure that our Kx user here were be very willing to let you try on the cam+
some hot pancakes..tats really.;p

Take cares & all the best to you! seeya!~;)

In conclusion, Pentax k-x is still the best bang-for-the-buck entry level DSLR, i believe it's set to bag many awards. it's just that i find it absurd people are taking the hype to ridiculous levels. :sweatsm:

IMO D5000 has very in-economical design problem: lack of AF motor drive & not in-body stabilised. means that every lens you buy, you be haunted by the fact that with Pentax you could have gotten more for less :bsmilie:

To TS, D5000 is as good as kx/D90 , except that it dun have af motor, which means u have to buy lens with af motor...

which costs more, end up u pay more in long term. Cos i believe, u will keep lens and upgrade body in future too.

If u die die want nikon, make the jump to D90/D300.

If not, K-X is a good choice, u can read up more from the reviews below to find out.

Panasonic GF1/Olympus EP1/2 use sensors only a little smaller than APS-C DSLR sensors (D80/kx etc) and the quality is probably passably similar.

It won't realy be an improvement (or perhaps just a very slight improvement) over the d80, and focussing is probably marginally slower, but it's alot lighter/smaller.

I agree, D5000 lack of AF and not in body stabilizer means I can only buy the more expensive Nikon lens, and play with my present lens. But I just saw the details of the Pentax KX sample images comparison, and I tell you, I **** in my pants. My D80 never gives me that kind of details. And Pentax Kx is cheap. I am selling my D80 body this week, after 2 years with it, but it would mean I have to sell away my Nikon lens gear to switch. Very big leap of faith man, I tell you.
