Qns abt iPhone

Hi all,

I am looking for those who uses Windows Outlook and Iphone and to ask questions about them. I would want to use the iphone but more importantly, i want to find out if i can sync my emails, contacts with outlook or manage it with similar applications?

I am:
- Using Windows, Outlook to manage my emails, my contacts (so that when i lose my phone, my notebook still has copies of it).
- I need to write emails/ replies emails on my phone (currently using Palm Treo 750v on Windows Mobile) so that i can sync them to send them out later.
- I like to have a bigger screen to surf (and no black berries please).
- dont intend to switch to a Mac.

Can the iphone synchronise (emails/ contacts) with my Laptop which runs on Windows XP/ If not, do i have to use/ buy another application to do that?

Can, using Quicktime. They have a sync function which all you need to do is to point to the location. Moreover Quicktime is free.

Yes, you can use iTunes to sync your contacts, calendars etc to your MS Outlook in Windows. Works in XP and Vista, not sure of Win7 yet.

Thanks NovJoe Phoakm, i read on their website that they can only do Microsoft Exchange Server, can they do Microsft Outlook as well?

Also, all the service providers are providing 8GB, 16GB, 32 GB. Is it wise to just go for the highest end?

The role of an exchange server is to host email and contacts etc on a cooperate basic which only some SMEs and big companies use. Ultimately, users still login and retrieve their emails using MS Outlook. For me, I do not have the luxury as I'm using webmail.

1) How can i prevent it fr gg online to search for data? i.e when i click on itunes.
2) I have a MSword feature when i am using Windows Mobile. Are there any software to replace this?
3) For the 'notes' function, can i use it as a sketch pad?

You can disable your 3G in Pref>General>Network and all other related data roaming you see there. But even so, if your tap on an app which requires the Internet, your phone might use Edge or 2G to surf still, though abit slow. Do you have data plan? If not would recommend you subscribe.. Kind of a waste to have an iPhone without the going online capabilities.

There are apps like MS word for e iPhone in e AppStore in iTunes. Do search for it but don't think they are free. Surf on your pc iTunes since you don't want to do it on your phone.

As for sketch, there are quite a few apps which allows you to do that, search for them in the AppStore.

With the telcos providing 12GB/mth of data plan, i don't think you can even hit 1gb with all the surfing of the internet. My mobile broadband can only hit 5GB the last month and i was downloading quite a number of things.

How can i find out how many characters get into an sms? Previously in my other phones, it shows 166 characters for 1 sms. Now, its not displayed on the iphone. How do u guys manage?

A better way is to sync your contacts, email, calendar to google. Google provides exchange service to do that. It's an alternative to Apple's Mobile Me service and it's free. Hence even if your pc is faulty, you still have everything in the cloud.

as long as your exchange server is Microsoft Exchange 2003 and above, with activesyn enabled, you can configure the iphone to use activesyn for email,contact and calender.
Dun need any cable to syn with notebook, just click on the Mail icon and it will syn via 2G, 3G or wireless. Your IT administrator should be able to advise you if the feature is available on your mail server or not.

Hi all, thanks for the help.

So far, what i found and would like to share:

1) Documents2 - to replace MS Word
2) WritePad - to replace handwriting and sketch pad
3) ANote Lite - to replace 'To do' List.

I havent fully explored the features. Let you know if they are really useful. Other inputs and comments appreciated.
