The camera is a Nikon FE. I just finished a roll of film, and I'm trying to take it out by pressing the film rewind button at the base of the camera, then winding the film back before taking it out (which is the correct way to do it). However, the film rewind button won't go down even if pressed with force, so rewinding the film is impossible. Can anyone fix this? Thanks, and sorry I'm such a newb.

I don't know if it's ok, but I'd say use more force. Sometimes when the film reaches the end and I wind film advance the mechanism one more time, it becomes quite taut, and the film rewind button gets hard to depress.
But if you wanna be safe with your film and your cam, perhaps you can unload the film at night in a pitch black room (closed doors, closed window blinds, unload in a black trash bag) and manually wind it back? Make sure you tell your family not to burst in on you though. Haha!

bring the whole camera to to photo processing shop and ask them to unload intheir dark room.....then send the camera for servicing......
Not sure whether those mini labs really have a dark room. But I guess those shops still selling film and film equipment might be of good help. Check with Ruby and The Camera Workshop. (Details in Consumer Corner.)
Thanks for all the responses guys. I had to play around with the button for about 20 minutes (pulling it and turning it and pushing it in until it finally popped down smoothly). Now, when I use the film rewinding knob to rewind the film, it never slackens. I mean, it's supposed to suddenly feel easier to pull when the film has successfully finished winding back, but I never get any indication because it's hard to wind even after a long time. I went into an unlit room at night to open the camera back, and I realized that the film had already been winded back. So yeah, there must be some mechanism issues, maybe because this camera is 2nd hand. Anyone recommend anything? Or I have to live with it.

For film camera, manual rewind film. if u can count how many turn that will be help to prevent 'over shoot' as normally we will wind at fast speed till the film back or de-catch.learn this next roll and try to slow down when it reach almost end and try to feel the different force apply between got film and end roll.
Another problem is the pin had been force that cause mechanically not smooth then u need to send in...
