Hi all, a minor problem here.

Lately my refrigerator has been producing a smell (distinctly non-food).
I'm wondering if it is coming from the rolls of film that i keep in it.
I keep them in a air-tight box in the fridge.

My major worry is that it will affect food products.
Please let me know, thanks.

No smell from mine so far.

I got about 20+ canisters of film & one new 100ft bulk roll.

I kept them in a tupperware in the chiller, so far no problems.

Maybe get those charcoal thingy for the fridge at diaso? $2 only

Before you attempt to deodorised it. First, try to identify the nature of the smell. Is it bec food spoil or fan coil problem. Is it due to durian or something.

Do a full clean up and figure out again. If the smell persist, get a service check or change the fridge entirely (if yours is not those expensive type).

Seems like its the problem with the fridge and not the films.
Cant be food since the smell is distinctly non-food.

In my fridge, it doesn't smell, because it stays fresh.
The rest of the film, I keep in a box, out of a fridge, and it smells when I open the box.
Particularly the box of developed film.

I'm getting hungry

Maybe you bought some rolls that were dipped in pee by someone? Hahaha. Not joking. I remember someone dipped some rolls in pee and dried them before developing. The results were kinda weird n cool! Hahaha. :X

I keep my stop bath in a plastic bottle in the toilet
If people look in my toilet storage, they see a bottle of yellow

just curious... am I the only one who thinks that ilford films are completely odourless?
all the rest, esp kodak has this very strong pungent smell the minute you pop the film out from the canister

Let me give you suggestions on how to store films in the fridge w/o letting it emit a strange smell..
Put the films in a zip-lock bag and put it into an air-tight container (i.e. lock & lock). This is to ensure that it have double protection.

Hi ruffgaws...Morning!

The smell you mention is difficult for us to tell you without actually going there and smell it ourselves. "Cough...cough...."

From experience, the smell can only come from three things:
(1) Mildew.
(2) Silver Nitrate compound in the negative rolls.
(3) Decomposing Aromatics

If it is Mildew...you are screwed. If it is Decomposing Aromatics, then it is a matter of using activated charcoals to rid your fridge of the smells. If it is coming from your film then your container is not fully airtight. No tupperware is fully airtight even it feels tight to you. Suggest you drop a sachet of silica gel into the container and use clingfilm to wrap the box. Better still...put it in the dry cabinet where you keep the cameras. I've done that since 1970s and it is still in great shape. Of course I've change many dry cabinets from the primitive ones when it first came out to the latest digital ones.

Go through and eliminate one by one the cause of the strange smells.

I only had one film type so far that really smelled badly when open the canister: Fuji 1600. All others (Lucky, Kodak) had only a very mild smell or none. When kept in the container no smell at all in the fridge. Maybe time for some general cleaning in the fridge? There's always something in the corner, hidden behind .. and waiting another week will give it enough time to develop extremities and a personality :bsmilie:
