1. in what area is critique to be sought?
Composition, Lighting, color

2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
Portraying a dark, dirty alley where people may not even have a look at such places.

3. under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
was walking around boat quay, finding some places which i would like to bring out in contrast of the clean and fine city

4. what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
With the lamp-post reflecting the light on the right, it gives a glimpse detail on what are on the wall, and the old furniture which stacks around at the back of the alley.

Anyway, just started shooting for only 9 days... so hope to get some enlightenment from you guys :) thanks

very interesting picture.. would like to see it more grittier.

i'm not sure how it brings out contrast of being clean and fine city..

the left and the right side are slightly unbalance..(the clean wall on top left). seems slightly out of place..was it intentional?

hi nysheng, i took the shoot slightly to the right to show more content since the left is just plain wall.

thanks for the comment... will improve further.. just started off... so trying out with some shots. :)

work on the composition. inject some life into the pic may help. it reminds me of my pic as well.... :)

sometimes the mix of dusk light with street lighting can give very interesting colors.

hi dingzyangz, i'm trying to see other picture, which still thinking what a good composition should be like. i will try on further hope to improve. and your pics really brings out the life... which i really like your shot...

thanks for the comment :) will work further...

I like this shoot a lot.
Maybe just need to remove the distracting lights at the top right.
You may also want to try to increase the cyan color because I do see some cyan light at the top portion which could inject more sleezy feel to it.

hi rendell, thanks for liking the shoot, i do agree that the little lights at the top right seems little distracting probably i will do something about it.

and as for the cyan color, i dun see any of that color in my photo. most of the color is more of yellowish gold color instead.

thanks for giving the comments :)

can i ask you, what is the subject here?

Hi night86mare, the main focus here is more on showing the back alley as a whole... Not much on a individual subject.. Yup :)

then my next question would be, if that is your purpose, which is acceptable.. which is better here, a horizontal frame or a vertical frame that you have used? :)

Hi, is good qns to ponder with. Hmmm.. First of all if I have a wide angle lens.. I will be greedy to capture the horizontal and vertical aspect of the alley... Both kind of framing do give a different result and feel to the final image.. As for my shot.. I decided to go with a vertical shot as I wish to portray the whole building instead of cutting it off at the top if I were to use a horizontal frame instead...

Probably lens may be a factor as well.. Cos I am only equip with the original kit lens.. So I have to make full use of it to capture the best shot that I could...

Thanks for the question.. Did make me think over the different aspect of photogaphy...

Cheers,
rayson

Too much space over the top. The idea of an alley alone in this case looks to be a little dry but I cannot think of any other suggestions for now . Sometimes human elements can add abit more sparkle to compositions too.

hi ryan, thanks for the comments :) hmmm... for the top, i left it that way as there are still certain details that i do not wish to remove it... as it is part of the whole image.

i do agree adding some human elements into the image may brighten and showing a stronger and powerful image... this is just one of the shot that i manage to took without shaking too much without the aid of my tripod...

i will be more careful with my shooting... hope to achieve better results next round... thanks so much once again :)
