1. in what area is critique to be sought?

This is a photo for a friend's portfolio. So I hope to get some feedbacks based on the
composition, posed and the post processing.

2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?

Any area which I can improved to make this picture, a model portfolio quality.

first up: pls post a smaller picture.

on the to the picture:
i dun particularly like the pose. the elbows straight out at the viewer doesn't seem too tasteful. her hair needs tidying up. it's blocking her face and eyes.

if it's for her portfolio..try to do fullbody shots instead.. she's a pretty model..need to work on her posing.

the pose could have probably worked if taken from a slightly different angle.

Possibly, but actually the pose was copied from Style fashion magazine. So I am still trying to figure out what is the missing ingredient. What about in terms of the skin tone? Is it too red or i should use brown wit higher contrast? Thanks...

Contrary to the first commentor, I thought the pose would work more effectively had her elbows been symmetrical, this looks awkward and odd. A pose can be weird and broken when the styling and emotions fit. This one, not so much.

I felt that the crop is too tight, and it could have been a tad better should you allow more of the skirt into the frame.
The skin tone is fine, it is quite pleasing and natural.

I also don't like the choice of full-white background. It may appear "studio-ish" but the mood is just void and lost. Had there be an element of nature/mechanical to associate with her clothes and styling it would have been better.

hmm i think the side light on the right is a bit harsh, and casts a distracting shadow because of her left elbow. perhaps could use a fill flash for the left or a reflector?

also, agree about the white background. since the blouse is floral, perhaps could use a dark green background, but use a kicker light on her shoulders/hair? this would also make her deep black hair more textured.

hope it helps :)

if the elbows were lower would it be better?

and lighting seems a bit harsh esp reflection from the elbows.

The skin tone does look a tad too red on my screen.
The right hand seems to be pressing against the face. Get her to relax, just touching the face will do. Avoid pressing in. ;)

more natural skin tones (even slightly desaturated colours) or b&w would work better against the white backdrop.

you have played too much with her face, i don't know what you have done here, but looks like oversmoothening of skin. classic clubsnap p&p syndrome.

yes, making a girl look prettier is good, but to turn her into a marble face where there is no skin texture, that is horrifying, not beautiful.

the way her face is lit, that needs work, her nose is definitely not the smallest, but you have highlighted it and made it look much bigger than it actually is. also, the posing , as others have mentioned, is not suitable for this angle.

Hi bro,

I am not being defensive here but I am not sure how you can see the oversmoothening based on the small picture i've posted here. Cos on the full size pic, it seems ok. Anyway, i put the the smoothening layer on photoshop, opacity 70%.

And, I did not do anything to the nose in PP. Maybe it's the lighting that has make the nose looks bigger.

But nevertheless, thank you for you feedbacks.

because it is oversmoothened in my book even for this size.

anyways, yes, i said that the nose effect was due to the lighting.. why would you want to pp a bigger nose? :dunno:

I think this pose requires a tighter crop or zoom in closer. The area below the elbow is drawing attention away.

on first look it reminds me of wayang makeup. was that intentional?
