Newbie Question on filters

i would like to ask whether what are the commonly used filters that photographer use for outdoor and night shots?

i am using the tianya GND.
currently looking at the ND filter and star filter...any comments on them? i understand that diff condition require diff ND, but what ND is commonly used?

as for star filters, i like the effect produced especially now with many christmas trees and lighting along orchard makes me wanna get one for the effect. what value of star filter looks good? 4? 6? 8?

ND is to minus exposure by a few stop according to what ND u buy..correct my sentence if wrong..

i find 6 is nice enuff..

Rally lah... Almost all of this is "up to you". As for the ND and GND filters, i suggest you read up a bit more on what they are used for. Then you will know when a filter type may come in handy.

hmm... ok thanks. i am leaning towards the 6 because it looks more normal in a sense...

yup, i have read up about the diff value of ND filter. and it seems that each of them have their own use depending on situation...

i had a GND, it's good to play around with when there is a horizontal demarcation between the ground and sky

i think star filters are often abused negatively, i.e. they are used for the sake of glitzy effects when the effect doesn't add positive to the picture.

nd filter, it just extends exposure, you can smooth out waves more lor. i use the nd110 from b+w, that's a 10 stop nd filter. nd8 is 3 stops.

some examples of what nd filter can do.

do they have vignetting or banding issues? i am wondering, i did a google, some people complained about such, it seems.

i wonder if it has the fader nd cross problem as well.

ya, its good for photos but not good for my pocket :cry: haha.

if u push it beyond the 8 stop marker. ( they did made mention on the SR manual not to go beyond 8 stops else funkiness sets in ) i usually work from 6 to 8 stops and i got no wierd banding issues
