dust or scratch?

looks like scratch to me.. when I locked the mirror, I saw like hairline dust, used blower but seems like 2 perm marks, un removable.

is it a layer of thin membrane o film over the sensor?
worried that it might b scratch marks..
cleaning at NSC @ 26.75 for D90..

Possible dust... go to the service centre and ask them to clean it.

unlikely is scratches, unless you always use something to poke inside your camera, btw your sensor is very very dirty. try to shoot @ f22 and see.

i did, yes, very.. but cannt realli say its dirty, i aimed in low light towards monitor with white screen @ ISO 3200, so grainy look.
anyway i guess i decided to go down NSC tmr.

Suggest professional cleaning lens and see what happens.

Try with F22 and point towards a clear sky or a sky blue colored card board. You should be able to clearly spot the dust bunnies. Some of the dust specks are wet and has streaks which resemble a scratch. If you're ok in spending those $$ cleaning at NSC, please go ahead for the peace of mind. The Low Pass Filter above your sensor is quite tough to scratch and you won't do any harm by cleaning with E2 + Sensor Swab which is available in most of the reputable shops.

Search for a similar thread by me on NSC's capabilities on sensor cleaning. They made it worse and took about 7 - 8 times to clean it properly. Make sure that you check your camera, especially your viewfinder after you get it back. They hold no warranty for sensor cleaning and make sure you bring your own lens and a gray or blue card to test at F22.

Might be dust on ur sensor or dust in ur lens. Try using diff lenses to see which is the case.
BTW other than the marks u pointed out I noticed several other dark spots, u may wanna check it out.

a friendly warning to all, self attempt to clean your sensor is at your own risk.
just returned from NSC today and my D90 was kept away as the 2 'lines' are proven as scratches.
a replacement D80 as kindly loaned to me for these few days till I get my body back.. sad.

trust the professionals.

actually I'm lucky to have my last day of warranty as of tmr.. but however, CMOS sensor is not within warranty, so nikon is kind to do me 1 time service (for this time rd).
supposingly a cleaning svc @ 26.75 for D90 was waivered but I have to check again with them. since they changing the sensor for me.. so I guess that's free liao.

anyway, the low pass filter is not realli scratch resistant.. a note

So how in the earth U get those scratches on the LPF? U clean the sensor yourself?

actually with a lens tissue and a soft brush.. i also dun know how the 2 lines got there....

Dude, I was recommending to use the right tools and normal lens tissue / brush is definitely a no go :nono:

I have been using Sensor Swab and E2 without any problems after the nightmare that I had with NSC. Search for my thread in CS about my experience with them for cleaning. Do you know that NSC doesn't have a clean room for cleaning? This was told by the engineer when he took more than 8 times to clean it properly for me..

BTW, they might not replace the sensor for you, it's gonna be just the LP filter on top of the sensor. In any case, it's good for you! All the best!
