Hi All,
am thinking of getting a Wide angle lense for a holiday, any suggestions of type and make?
Are these out for rent so that trials can be made before I purchase one?
Please advise.
My thanks

Canon 1000d its my first.

Read the lens reviews on photozone.de and decide from there. :)

my thanks

For renting you can check the Commercial Services section.

Sigma 10-20. Relatively cheap and the widest UWA out there for APSC. Look out for quality issues like focusing problems before you buy though.
Only downside is that its rather large.

Won't regret buying the Canon 10-22mm

Check out a few threads in Canon sub-forum.
Hot item will be EFS 10-22; Tokina 11-16 and Sigma 10-20. Also Sigma 12-24 and Tokina 12-24

the sigma 10-20 got great reviews by thom hogan ( he was comparing against nikon wide zooms )

a small excerpt on his positives

Good enough. I've tested a lot of options in the 10-12mm range, and they all come with liabilities. The Sigma's liabilities are more livable for a landscape shooter than the alternatives.
A good value. I've dragged this lens around the world. It holds up to my abuse and gives me that good enough performance I just mentioned. Considering it costs less than the Nikkor, that makes it a decent value, too.

Might have some sample variations, so check before making purchase

Happy shopping and shooting

Ryan

Good. Our good friend Shen siung has listed quite comprehensively the WA lenses that you may like to see.
