Is it possible to get such results straight out from the camera?

Thanks in advance! :D

Quite simple, buy a D40, get a prime portrait lens and after shooting for 10 years you'll get that:bsmilie:

pic was shot with a 5D Mk II with 50/1.4 :)

I would think it's difficult. to get the sharpness, u need a good lens, prob F2.8 or below for the dof. Your focusing must be good to get the right area sharp (i.e. the eyes). Some sharpening can be done in camera so that is more or less covered.

The biggest problem will be B&W. A simple in-camera conversion is likely to have lots of grey area without clean white/black area and lacking in contrast.

So i would say impossible.

In terms of ultra sharp photos, yes, its possible to get them straight out of the camera.
But to achieve the effect in the photo that u included in ur post, more photoshopping needs to be done, such as contrast, lighting etc.

sharpness is often confused with contrast.

sharpness is the amount of detail you can find, but some people think that more contrast = can see more detail. that's not necessarily true.

b&w conversions in digital darkroom is an art. you have to make sure the correct tones are achieved, to get the mood you want, emphasize what you want. doing that in cam just throws everything out of the box.

@Zaren: O.O! haha how did you find that out?

@night86mare: I was asking in terms of details. sorry for any confusion! or is your reply to that of above when someone else was talking about contrast?

@everyone else: Thanks! I have a better idea now. Haha i'm avoiding photoshop! (call me lazyy)

[so i reckon the conclusion is that i cant get such details (sharpness, tone, textures(if you get what i mean) etc) straight out of a cam?]
;)

it's possible to get close to that image effect, yes. spot meter on the eye, -ev and shoot.
but that exact effect? nope

You can get close. I have shots like that. :)

I am trying to learn how to do these kind of shots.
Rashkae, if you don't mind me asking, could you show me your shots either here (i.e. if TS seanlim doesn't mind) or a link perhaps, and maybe show me your settings so that I can give it more try?
Thanks in advance, Rashkae.

I am not sure whether to have a Ultra sharp photos without using Photoshop is possible. I really hope to achieve this too.

I am not able to produce the quality like photo without some cosmetic touch up - I am just using a entry-level camera body and some not too bad lens.

Maybe with a good solid camera body and a prime lens and use of a tripod and remote, should do the trick?

Sure, let me dig up a file. I'll PM you.

wowee! seems like im not the only one!

Rashkae please do post here. It's only good for everyone else who wants to learn too! THANKS!

Hehe... thanks bro Rashkae!
My PM box is open wide at f/0.95 awaiting... for specific instructions on settings and PP for these kind of shots from you...
And yes, seanlim... I am sure Rashkae wouldn't mind putting up a few of his works on your thread... Looking forward to them. Thanks too!

At this small size 600x480 screen, anything reasonably sharp will look very sharp. Look at 1024x768, then you can finally say it is sharp.

But agreed on using prime lens does produce sharper image.

Well, here's one shot that I did. It's not on the full post-processing level the above image uses, but it's close and straight off-camera (aside from resizing).

Lighting: TV
50mm, f/2.

Camera settings:
Creative style: B&W
Contrast: +3
Sharpness +3
Centre weighted metering, -1EV

:thumbsup:Rashkae bro, exact to the spot.
Well, looking carefully, actually, the effect certainly is very very close. And yours is direct from the camera.
f/2.0.
Really thanks, Rashkae!
Worth the wait for your post, haha...:bsmilie::bsmilie:

Meh, I had to dig for a pic that had a similar pose to the original image. That's all i could find. :p
