Hi guys, just want to check if anyone has ever encounter this problem. When i'm practicing to shot using a Nikon DX 35mm f/1.8 lens on my D5000, my hands will sometimes tremble when i hold down the shutter button while trying to keep my hands steady after focusing. My hold on the camera was firm, and my breathing technique was correct. Is there any explanation for this problem that i'm facing? The only reason i can think of is that my arms ain't use to the weight of the cam. Any other possibilities besides that?

A common neurological problem. Localised nerve irritability from unstable nerve fibre membrane.
If it is not this... then it's time to see your Doctor already.

its just your nerves, or your arms not strong enough.

Hi Binzento...Welcome...

Since you didn't give your age, my answer will only be a generalisation.

There's no such thing as a breathing technique unless you are breathing heavily or panting. Causes of hand trembling are usually due to alcohol consumption withdrawal and lithium poisoning. It could also be excitment due to having a new camera for the first time or fatigue and stress.

Try to do this: Take a chopstick and while sitting in front of your monitor, point at a top corner of your monitor without your hand resting on anything. Do it for a minute. If you notice that in a minute, your chopstick cannot stay in a same spot, you have either (a) a weak hand or (b) you are "panting"

If you notice your chopstick trembling, and you are breathing normally, then it is advisable to visit your family doctor for advice.

Hope that helps.

Don't get too scare unless your hands are trembling on their own.

Try tuck your hands to your chest and up your shoulder. Try not to hold with your wrist halfway as it will cause you to use hold with your muscle which tremble.

There is no perfect stable but some people will tremble more than others. Fats and skinny person will be different too.

Hi hydroburn, tks for you advice. Think i have weak arms.. haiz..

Usually none. The harder you try to avoid it, the more aware you are of it, the worse it becomes.

Hi limwhow, I wasn't really aware of it till i got my lens thats without VR.

Hi, hotwork77, i'm in my early 30s and also thanks alot for your little experiment, really helps :). I stretch out my arms and my chopstick wasn't able to stay still at a point, it was shaking quite abit, and after around 30 secs my arms starts to burn up. So i guess i have weak hands. :)

Hi spheredome, i tried tucking my hands to my chest and keeping my arms close to my body, but still will tremble. Think i have weak arms, so i guess i have to start doing push ups and some dumb bell training :bsmilie:

Relax lah ... you are probably too tense ... Shoot more, and perhaps with more pratice, steadiness will come

Take a deep breath, tuck both your elbows close to your body or lower chest area, frame your picture and squeeeeze the button slowly ... the whole "shooting process" would take only a few seconds ... your hands hopefully may hold steady for this short period ... I hope :)

I get that too when I overdose on coffee... I'm talking like 4-5 super strong coffee. Other than that, it's probably nervousness... stay calm, relax, and shoot.

Did the photos come out properly or are they all blurry?

haven't happened before? how about with other lenses?
my hands usually shake(more) when very small and light lens mounted on the cam(e.g. 50mm f1.8)..
i need to press(more) the back of the cam to my face(nose) and pause my breath longer whenever i use that little lens..
but never got an idea to check if other ppl are also having this problem :sweatsm:

There is something you can try since your are going to train with dumb bell jokingly. :D, go to royal sporting hse and buy the weight lift training glove that fits your palm size. It has lycra that will assist in palm and finger firmness.

Well... pumping iron (dumbells etc) will only strengthen most of your arm muscles. You need to have proper exercises with the weights to train the muscles in question. One thing I learnt was to hold the dumbell as if it was a camera and just hold it there... then take down which parts tend to feel tired first.

More often than not, we forget that the fine muscles in our hands also may be a weakness... might want to pay attention with small mobility exercises like chinese medicinal balls (Proper name: Baoding Balls http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baoding_Balls ) to improve grip and control.

Cheers =)

relax. :D

Hi asterix54, will be setting a target for myself to at least practice shooting for 2 hrs a day. ;)

Hi sebianos, wow thats alot of coffee. For myself i don't drink coffee and alcohol , only maybe a cup of tea in the morning. The photos comes out kinda blur for me. Took quite a few photos and choose the best one that i took, 1 with tripod another without.

Hi aungzawwin, happen to my other lens as well when i turn off VR. I also tried to press back into my face, problem is i can't press too back in cause i'm wearing glasses (I can't see anything without my glasses :bsmilie: )

Hi spheredome, tks for the info, will check it out if i decide to hit the gym ^_^

My forearms muscles are the weakest cause when hold my arms out, my forearms will be the first to ache followed by my triceps then biceps. Hmm Chinese medicinal balls, will hand grippers work as well?

perhaps also try to avoid drinking too much coffee. too much caffiene in your system will cause the hands to tremble too

Looks pretty all right to me. Not sure about VR but Panasonic OIS tends to reduce camera shake up to 3 stops. Perhaps, you can look into playing with the ISO / Aperture / Shutterspeed. For me, the end result is most important and there's always unsharp mask. ;)

Also, I think it's a misconception that every photo taken by photographers is razor sharp. Or that every image is a winner. Go look through some mags like Practical Photography - and you'll see that the photographer probably shot about 30 shots and end up with one; which is that post-processed.

Go easy on yourself, it's when you start thinking and putting too much pressure on yourself that hands tremble more. Just enjoy the process of capturing moments.

All the best, do your best to build a stronger body.

To ricleo: Urm... as for coffee, yes it's a lot. But I love my coffee too much. My bad :embrass:

hi bizento
take note of trembling hands .if u stretch out your arms horizontally infront at shoulder height and there is trembling, it could be a medical problem of thyroid.go see a doctor, most likely he will order a bloodtest to do a thyroid screen. seek medical help soon.
trembling hands is the first signs of thyroid problem and is treatable so dont worry just go see a doc. other signs are perspiring easily alot, weight loss, and bulging eyes although these symptons maynot appear at once.
