Please advice what are the thing to bring along dunring a negative temperature holiday..
And how do I take care of my DSLR camera?

Likewise, i off to States December for a winter holiday.. Lots of juice for ur cam/flash tat's a must. But for storage in hotel room, do your bring like drybox with lots of silica gel OR simply heck care?

1. What is the humidity there?
2. Assuming it's >80% and very warm all the time, and you never bring your camera outside, and you leave it in a dark space, will it be there for 3 months or more?

I going to Hokkiado for holiday..
the temp there will be in negative.. and will be bringing my camera everywhere i go.
i understand i need lots of battery, but how do i keep my camera in correct temp?
will the negative temp spoilt my camera?

what can i say, i love this time of the year.... where all the winter questions pop up.

why don't people ask whether their cameras can work in warm countries? i wonder if people living in predominantly cold climates ask about travelling to the tropics. :bsmilie:

My dSLR has been to many places, hot or cold, dry or humid, high or low altitudes, and it has worked fine, and is still working.

Just came back from mongolia, at one time in -15 degrees in the morning... You my wanna read up more in the tread web sent by others...As for me just my 2 cent
1) Yes, bring extra batteries, keep the battery warm in your jacket. And i usually keep it in a small sack that i sleep with in my sleeping bag.. ..areas with no electricity, i'll bring more batts, but otherwise if going for long period, would consider a solar battery charger. I would bring my film SLR bodies as a back up!
2)Place the camera in a waterproof sack or ziplock bag when moving from warm house/tent to a cold outdoor and vice versa....as condensation would/may inflict damage to the electronics. Do dust off the snow before it melt indoors...with a fine brush, i use a $1.00 1/2 inch brush.
3)Try and avoid changing lens in outdoor....I Learnt it a hard way! if you really need to do it...do it indoor, or do it in a clean bag... switch off camera, point body facing down and swap the lens carefully....don't rush. lens drop, break, Do practise it untill become natural for you. Otherwise. consider carrying a 2nd body. As for me. i forcast my theme for the day....landscape day ,use my 18-55mm kit, portrait day/night use my 50mm, long lens day,,,my 70-300mm etc.... I improvise alot using what lens i had attached on.


4)conserve power....i reduce the need to review the pictures too much. LCD screen uses more power.

Anyway... just read more and enjoy shooting! please bring a back up. be it point and shoot (PNS) or film camera (rarely need batteries!)

Clean your lens, CCD & mirror everyday.
This is to prevent condensed water from damaging the body/lenses.

that's because my Canon PnS ever failed me on one of the cold winter trip :embrass:so i cant help but worry about my DSLR too :cry:

DSLR are built to higher standards than compact cams.

Condensation occurs when you bring cold equipment into a warmer room. Coming from a warm room into the cold there is no condensation. You can verify this easily in Singapore with some over-cooled shopping malls.

my camera did die off when i went holiday in Korea... so i worried abt this coming holiday..

Well... Dunno about Canon, really. It's true that when I went to the top of Mt. Kilimajaro, my cheap cheap Sony A100 worked perfectly while 2 fellow climber's Canon 350D froze up and wouldn't shoot. But we're talking extremely low temperatures and wind chill here.

For basic travel, there should be no problem.

Winter is the best time for cameras, clear blue sky, very, very low humidity. Only think I can think of is to keep battery warm as it can get discharge rather quickly. Of course, keep the camera dry if there is a shower or a snow fight.
