Flash firing

Hi all! anyone knows whats the real purpose for flash firing besides blinding your friends?

To illuminate a scene properly, or, in lower-end cameras, to assist autofocus.

All this is also in your manual. I suggest reading it.

i read it in my manual, im sorry i if i did not make my self clear, i was referring to the manual flash firing. not auto ones. same function?

Manual as in Manual Flash settings or just pressing the pilot button? The latter one is a test function whereas Manual settings are meant to adjust the flash where no automatic settings are available or would not produce the intended result.

Manual as in the booklet manual. There are two buttons beside each other, the one on the left is the one which enables me to flash fire.

if i interpreted your description right, then it should be test fire. any button you press besides the shutter which causes the flash to fire ought to be the test fire button...

Well you can use it to do ghosting exposure or people drawing a pattern with a light stick or sparkler. Test lighting with a separate light meter etc.

Doing those would only require the shutter to be open for a long period of time. The flash fire helps?

Yes, the shutter needs to be open. You need to do it in an environment that is pretty dark such that the interval x sec is insufficient for the camera to see the person. Bec the camera can only see the lighted sparkler, the person can draw the pattern follow by a final burst of flash at the last second to reveal the person. The moment the flash is gone, shutter closes.

Trial shots will normally need be done to determine how slowly the person should move the sparkler so that sensor capture sufficient light

ah. i understand what you're getting at. I know that using the flash set as second curtain can do light painting, but i dont usually use it. i only set my camera on bulb mode and hold the shutter open until the painting is complete.

But as for the flash firing effect, i still dont really get the purpose for it. I can keep flash rapidly by pressing the button continuously. Either it is for testing the flash and other uses as mentioned by other members.
