Does 50mm f1.4 allow you to take better picture than 70-200mm f2.8 in low light?

Heard the aperture number (e.g. f1.4, f2.8) is the ratio of the focal length to diameter of aperture. Just wondering does it mean 50mm f1.4 allow you to take better picture than 70-200mm f2.8 in low light? If yes, can we say 50mm f1.4/f1.2 are king of low light?

It just means that generally, the possibility of you nailing a shot that is properly exposed and in focus increases

yes if you can get closer to your subject using the 50 1.4 as compared to the 70-200.

king of low light? what about those old 50mm F 0.95 lens hahaha......

It really depends on the situation. If you can't get near 70-200 may be of the upper hand here. If you can get near, then the 50mm will be. Of course, f1.4 vs f2.8. F1.4 will allow you to have a faster shutter speed, so that may be useful when taking in low light.

85mm also has f1.2, there are others as well, 21mm, 24mm & 35mm also got kings and queens at f1.4

it isn't fair to say either will allow u take better pictures, since they have very different flexibilities, focal lengths, focusing distances, size and weight. and hence each can be the better-suited lens in different situations.

if all you are concerned about is letting in more light then just get the lens with the biggest aperture u can afford.

low light as in how low?
if light is too low, got f0.95 lens also useless.

big aperture lens is not the only solution, some time just use flash can save you few thousands dollars and get better pictures.

Basically to answer ur question, between the 2 lenses, the 50mm will allow u the possibility of getting a clearer picture due to the f1.4 compared to the zoom lens' f2.8

the 18-55 f3.5 to f5.6 with flash is the king of low light. If u dont believe, get the f1.4 n shoot in low light. U'll def be disappointed.

Basically to answer ur question, between the 2 lenses, the 50mm will allow u the possibility of getting a clearer picture due to the f1.4 compared to the zoom lens' f2.8

technically, using a f1.4 lens at wide open will gain two stops exposure over a f2.8 lens shooting at wide open.

but does it equal to getting better pictures? that is very subjective.
