When I shoot with my D40 with the 18-55mm kit lens, I wish I have a 55-200mm with me. After I bought a 55-200mm and go out shooting with it, I wish I have the 18-55mm with me.

Of course, I can always bring two lenses with me and change lens on the spot but I hate to do it.

Now, I feel maybe I should get a 18-105mm kit lens instead.

I know D90 comes with 18-105mm lens and it must be a perfect combination.

How about people who use a D40 with 18-105mm, what's your experience like?

I am not going for 18-200mm, it is too expensive for me.

Haha. Buy buy buy virus.
Hmm, for me, I also will think like that often.
But you gotta train your shooting, i think?
Like stick to a lens and use it to compose.
Go near, step back?
haha. enjoy! :D

I just got my D3000 last month, instead of settling with a kit lens, i trade-in the 18-55mm at alan and topped up another 340 for an 18-105mm which is the kit lens for D90. I feel that it suffice for most of my shooting needs except in occasions whereby I try to shoot animals (e.g. stray cats) and I cannot get too close to them.

Either get a 18-200, or bring both lenses.

You made the right decision. Not sure whether $340 is too much though but it doesn't matter, a right decision is more important. :)

I would be happy to have a 18-105mm on my D40.

do you sums, and if you think replacing the 18-55 (and 55-200?) with the 18-105 is within your means, by all means BBB

If u think 18-200 is too expensive for u. Why not just stick with the combo u have? Just change lens if thers's a need to.

If u find it troublesome, i guess u'll have to save up and get the 18-200 then try to sell off the kit lens and 55-200mm

Been using d40 with 18-105 for a long time!
never regretted it! awesome lens.

same idea.

I don't often shoot at longer than 100mm, so to me, the 18-105 is the ideal focal range for a walkabout lens. 18-200 is more expense (and weight) for no benefit.
