Hi everyone. Was fooling round one day with my camera in my room when I noticed something weird. The autofocus spots are superimposed on the photos when I reviewed the pictures on my camera. The spots don't appear when I transfer the photos out though so isn't a big matter. Just curious.

How the picture looks on the camera(Captured with a PnS):

How the picture turns out on the computer:

Camera model: 40D
Firmware: 1.1.1
Autofocus: On

Wondering if its a firmware thing or a malfunction. Never noticed this before I upgraded my firmware and for sometime after I upgraded the firmware.

It's an option which you can disable. It's called
something like focus highlight.

Oh... Thanks... where do I disable it? I can't seem to find the function on the menu. I must have set it unknowingly while fooling around.

"Focus Point Disp." on my 5D Mark II. RTFM.

According to the 40D manual, it is an option called "AF point disp.". When you go into your camera's menu, it should be the fourth tab from the left or the 2nd blue Playback tab (Pg 39) and the AF point disp. is the 2nd item on that tab.

Quote from Pg 117
"When the [AF point disp.] menu is set to [Enable], the AF point which achieved focus will be displayed in red. If automatic AF point selection was used, multiple AF points might be displayed in red." Unquote.

i think this is quite a good function to leave on. it tells you specifically where the camera is focused on. this way you won't mis-focus a moment and regret it later when it is in your comp. ;)

i prefer not to have it on, cos its kinda distracting on the LCD, also, how come 40D can have so many AF points active?

how can u not know where the camera is focusing when u shoot the photo? :dunno:

I don't have much knowledge about this, but doesn't one of Canon's included software also show focus points?

Yup, DPP also can show the AF points used..

I find it strange why you can't read the manual and work this out yourself.

It's like "Wah..Wah!" Then you have a nipple shoved into your mouth. Baby feeding...

when one has to study the manual to figure how things work ... it mean the user interface isn't properly thought out and designed.

do u study your MacBook manual to figure out how to turn it on?
