sony 50mm f1.8 vs tamron 17-50mm f2.8

Hi guys,

I have a 50mm f1.8 and I love the lens for its sharpness and colour. However at times I felt that the fixed 50mm is limited for my usage, as such I'm thinking of selling it to get the tamron 17-50mm, which would have the range I need. However I'm concerned as to whether this lens will be as Sharp as the 50mm prime?

Does anyone hv experience of using both lenses and can give a feedback please.

i heard that the tammy is good too

but it cost much more than the F1.8..
ive used the F1.8 for a day and the fun part about using fixed focal lens is that u have to walk close or further away from the subject to take pictures. and it helps u train ur guts to approach people to take their picture Wahaha

The tammy will not be as good for portraiture as the 50mm.

But, you'll get more "zoom" versatility.

Personally, I'd keep the 50mm for portraiture, then save up money and get a tammy or a second-hand CZ16-80 for walkabout.

But then I already hv a beercan, the tamron will render the beercan useless...

I will keep 50mm f1.8 and get the tamron lens 17-50.
Both are for different purpose.

Anyway, I'm not a sony guy but I have the tamron 17-50 as well as a 50mm prime.

I have the tammy and the 50mm 1.4 instead. So far, I mainly use my 50mm 1.4 for indoor portraitures and occasional outdoor low light situations.

The tammy is much more versatile than the 50mm of course. The tammy is also a very sharp lens at f4 and above. I've also used the tammy for indoor flash portraitures and it's sharp.

I'm not sure how's the f1.8 compared to the 1.4. Assuming they are comparable, I'll keep both if I were you.

1. Lens: Tamron 17-50. Shot at f5.6, 1/200, 50mm with flash

2. Lens Tamron 17-50. Shot at f7.1, 1/320, 17mm

3. Lens Sony 50mm f1.4. Shot at f4 1/250 (That's me BTW )

4. Lens Sony 50mm f1.4. Shot at f2.8 1/20

Do you need the constant f2.8? You may want to consider the 16-80mm or 16-105mm instead if you do not need the constant f2.8.

I have the 50mm f1.7, 50mm f1.4, 17-50mm and 16-105mm and I prefer the 16-105mm's versatility and sharpness (even shooting wide open) over the others.

you can't compare 18-250mm sharpness to beercan or 17-50mm sharpness though, also beercan will shine in in door or low light condition, 18-250mm will have difficulty in focusing in indoor condition at f/5.6-6.3 range. But 18-250mm is still a good lens with a good range especially when you don't want to bring too many lens out.

So best is buy it all ;p Or depend on what you shoot most, just choose the lens/range/condition you use most.

if it really is... then you should sell the beercan and get a 18-250 ;p so you'll have 1 prime and an all in 1 zoom~

These are the lens I have

Minolta AF 28-80mm f3.5 - 5.6 D
Minolta 70-210 F4 Beercan
Sony 50mm f1.8

I usually bring all 3 lens out, as they all have their uses. The quality of the 28-80 is bad, but due to the limiting focus length of the 50mm, I still hv to use the 28-80 at times. I absolutely love the 50mm prime, the colours and sharpness is so much better than the 28-80mm.

Some pictures taken by me (sorry im a noob, the pictures arent good at all). The cosplayer photos are taken using the 50mm. The rest of the pictures are using either the minolta 28-80mm, or the 18-70 kit lens (which i sold already).

Therefore I thought of getting an upgrade to the 28-80, thus the tamron 17-50 comes in. But the though of getting a 18-250mm length is pretty appealing, as it will save me the hassle of bringing 3 lenses (or maybe just 2, since i can keep the 50mm at home unless i know im taking lotsa indoor shots) out everytime.

But the 18-250mm will produce lousier quality compared to a 17-50 + beercan combo...

if you don't pixel peep, worry about distortion or look into the corner softness much, actually 18-250mm is a good zoom lens, it at least the quality similar to 18-70mm kit lens.

lousier quality indoor shots maybe, cos the af is quite hopeless for indoor shots without flash, makes u miss some photo opportunities... makes me wish i had an a700 with the red af illuminator... flash strobe is pretty irritating imo:bsmilie:

but nothing beats the convenience of just pickin up ur cam and going out of the house knowing that you won't need any other lenses or accessories...

I bought the Tamron 17-50 yesterday. Yeah im very impulsive guy, when i wan something i just get it immediately (no point waiting LOL). Im still very tempted by the 18-250, maybe i'll get a 2nd hand one another day (or if the 18-270mm gets a Alpha mount!)

Anyway normally for lenses in general, they'll be quite soft at their widest angle and when aperture is wide open right?

So at which focus length and aperture will the tamron 17-50 be sharpest?

I dont hv time to take pics yesterday, so just did a couple of test shots at around 20mm f4 IIRC. But i still feel its abit soft (when compared with the photos taken by the 50mm f1.8)...
