GPS Data Logger Device

Planning to get a GPS Data Logger for photo location tagging purposes. Currently choosing between:

1. Holux M1000C

2. Amod AGL3080

I'm kind of leaning towards Holux since it appears -- on paper at least -- to be better in terms of satellite acquisition capability. However I've been unable to find reviews on the Holux so I'm unable to confirm my hunch.

If anybody happens to be in my shoes before, would appreciate if you can share what you bought in the end... and why. :angel:

As for those who may own or have owned/tried any of the abovementioned units, any feedbacks/input (i.e. pros and cons) would be appreciated.

Pinoy, for the two GPS tagging device, do you have to connect them to your camera in order for them to work?
Do they automatically insert the location into your EXIF?
And (sorry if I ask a little more), where can you buy them from in Singapore?

Nope. Not needed. They work independently. Meaning turn it on, dump it into or hang it on your bag and turn it off once you want it to stop tracking your location.

Location gets tagged into your pictures by the software provided.

For AMOD, it has to be ordered overseas AFAIK. The Holux can be bought in Eastgear.

I see. So it is the software that is going to synchronise the GPS data with the individual photos. Thanks for all your info, Pinoy.

I've using a Qstarz BT-1000P for 2 years. Works reasonably well, but subject to location errors indoors - instead of losing the signal completely, it tries too hard and makes mistakes...

I've never used the Qstarz geotagging software though, since my OS of choice is Linux, none of the supplied Windows software was of interest to me.

The work flow is -
Turn logger on, clip to belt then ignore for the day. Back home, connect to PC and download the log. Export to GPX format, run geotagging software - import days photos. Import days GPX file. The software uses the EXIF time to correlate the GPS co-ordinates and then saves this in the appropiate EXIF fields in the image files.

Note this requires the time in your camera to be accurately set.

I wouldn't throw the reciever in a bag and forget about it though - it might end up under something that blocks the GPS signal and drop out of sync or make errors more often than it otherwise would.

As near as I can determine there are two GPS chips in these things, some based on MTK and some based on SiRF. Attached to this is a bluetooth tranciever and a USB-Serial converter and USB power battery charger. It also appears most of the manufactures don't bother modifiying the embeded OEM GPS software past puting their own name in there.
Holux seem one of the few that actually heavly customise their firmware - most appear to just the OEM code from MTK or SiRF.

Folks, if anyone interested I'm willing to let go my BT-Q1000 for SGD100. I bought it with the intention to used with my then HTC PDA. But I ended up with a Nokia N95 8GB. So the unit is like new as I have only tested it once and was never used thereafter.

I am choosing my gps device now. But I am interested in the Easytagger GPS which combine a data logger and besides it can geotag my photos taken by my D5000 directly. But I have not seen a test report. Anyone has any experiences?
