Reviews of the Sigma 18-250 seems pretty good, however its also priced higher than the Tamron 18-250.

Just wondering if anyone has tested both lenses from Tamron and Sigma before, and is the Sigma one able to justify the higher price?

Thanks!

...
not sure if the tamron 18-250 has a USM/IS like feature w/c is available in sigma 18-250(OS/HSM)

Tamron 18-250 does not include VC(VR/IS/OS)..nor the AF-S/USM/HSM :)
but it is very small and light..saying about its range..

or are you referring to the Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical?
i've looked at both lenses for a short while (did not rent) and ended up getting the sigma instead. also did quite a bit of research online.
i can't really remember the price for the tamron but its quite similar to the S18-250 OS HSM (the tamron used to be cheaper earlier in the year but the price has since gone up)

1) image quality pretty much the same (imho) and only reviewed on the camera 3 inch screen. but having looked at online sample pictures, i felt the sigma delivered richer colours
2) AF - both have issues in low contrast/low light conditions but tamron seems to be a bit worse
3) zoom range - tamron can extend 20mm further at the tele end, not very significant to me
4) OS - couldn't really test it properly but using the sigma for some time now and i would say the OS isn't good enough for my shaky hands (but thats just me) :bsmilie:
5) build - sigma feels more solid but tamron has the nice gold ring around it
6) zoom ring - sigma turns the same way as canon lenses (which i use)

Price has definitely gone up for the Tamron 18-270 as i was quoted $980 by AP

Was considering the Sigma 18-250 as well..but decided to jump on this instead

here are my views:

image quality is quite good but only to the limited areas that it performs. knowing the sweet spots is key
AF is ok but u may have to let it AF a few times. It hunts in the dark but depending on your patience, it may be too much for you.

There are some users here who have put up beautiful night or day shots so is it really the equipment? or....?

VC is just ridiculous.. it plains stops motion in its tracks. i'm not blowing the horn here but other users may agree.

Build is ok.. ( it was shipped in a paper box with cardboard infill) Other then the little resistance turning the ring, there rest aren't showstoppers.

Hope it helps with your decision =)

the sigma also does AF hunting quite a bit, but felt the tamron might be a bit slower

and having used the sigma for some time, i must admit that the OS on the sigma is not that excellent, so if OS/IS/VC is very important to you, the tamron might be a better choice

Tried both today...
i came in the shop sure of getting the Sigma(was looking forward to the 4 SLD glass elements..)..BUT...after testing it..i have a few comments..

VC is Awesome..
OS...is..not as effective as VC..the first thing that came to my head was..."WTF??"...i used the Canon 18-200 on saturday for the Photomarathon...in my opinion..sigma is the last of the 3...
HSM is in my opinion a gimmick..not to mention...noisy..
The Tammy i expected a focusing "whirr" so i got no comment..it is as expected already..
I like the colours out of the tamron better too..

i ended up buying the Tammy 18-270..

In my experience, Tamron's VC is superior to its rivals. However, I have not used the Sigma 18-250mm OS to comment. But the Tamron 18-270mm is excellent, for what it is worth.

seems like sigma sounds better to me
um... i am wondering is this lens produce good function with nikon d80?
coz it is for dx cam right?

feel like to get this lens then coz it is quite cheap
in fact i wanna get Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II just because its f2.8
but it is so expensive, and now i found out this lens, the range quite attacts me... and the price is much more cheap, but the aperture... jsut worried low light situation or liek zoom to max.. the aperture is small... :dunno: nothing is perfect...

i owned tamron 17-55
tokina 11-16mm
if i get this sigma, i guess i can probably sells my tamron..
haha... but well, think f2.8 constant does a good point to a lens

If you are set on a f2.8, have you considered the Sigma 50 -150mm f2.8 II?

i am not sure too :dunno:
coz i do need a telephoto lens
150mm seems like not far enough for me
at first i was considering sigma 70-200
but now i saw this 18-270mm, looks good too
just it isnt f2.8 constant...
