Does any photographer here has any agenda to be at the Barclays Singapore Open (Sentosa) http://www.barclayssingaporeopen.com/

I'd like to be there but since I'm from Indonesia, would be best if I know first whether bringing camera is allowed.

Anyone has any experience on this last year? Share please your experience photographing the event (lenses used, weather, rules, officials, etcs to expect and to avoid).

Thanks,

JAKOP

Hi

I guess like all Golf PGA tours etc think Cameras are not allowed on the field. I do went to last year open but i only bring my P&S Camera, and snap like a little mouse haha.

As for DSLR i seldom see people bring unless its for official photographers. I would like to know also if could bring DSLR as i intend to go this year.

Anyone or the official photographers could enlighten us??

have you checked with the organizer?

U can bring in ya DSLR to shoot. Just try to observe the rules. Most importantly, do not distract the players with ya shutter sound.

Either keep a fair distance away or capture the moment after the player tee off or hit the ball. Or else u might be ask to leave. I do play golf myself n I know it's very distracting with the shutter sound.

Tele lens will be good.

Thanks. I have to make sure it's allowed to bring my DSLR and long tele (ZD150mm = 300mmFF). Have emailed the organizer but no reply yet so far.

Went to HSBC LPGA event held here earlier this year. The official stand for all golf tournaments is that photography is not allowed unless you are an official photographer, so writing in officially will just get you the usual "no". (My friend wrote to the organiser of the HSBC event). However, there are many people who bring long telephoto lenses to these tournaments... Just keep it discreet and quiet, I guess.

Ya agree i do went to HSBC LPGA too, I do bring camera but just shoot very discreetly.

But if you bring your DSLR with telephoto meaning u have to stand a distance away from the action. As if you were close to the line normally the Marshall will indicate no cameras and suck thumb hv to keep it.

Thats leave out of whether you want to watch the action or just mere enjoy snapping the pics.

Now, certain dSLR cameras have got quiet mode. Dunno if that is still quiet enough to shoot with say a 70-200 lens or even a 70-300 at say about 50m away.

Once, there was an event at the Tanah Merah course. The blast of the jet engines from the nearby runway is at least 1000 times louder than the shutter click..

lol the blast of the jet engines from airplanes no choice right haha unless if Tiger Woods or Mickelson wants to tee off the official inform the Aircontrol tower to stop all planes movements which is impossible right haha

The idea is to reduce or elimate the amount of unnecessary distraction to the players on the field. So no camera are allowed. Once saw Mickelson was angry due to a so called photographer with DSLR snapping pics and the clicks sound could be heard, that bugger was told to leave the field haha if i am not wrong thats Barclays Open last year.

Simple answer is no.

If you wish to push the rules then by all means.

Speaking as a professional that has covered various events in the UK including the Open Championship, photography is strictly prohibited in professional golf tournaments everywhere that I have been.

Looking at last year's leaderboard, there are some high profile names on so it's a big tournament, and none of those players are going to expect camera shutters even if the stewards might be more tolerant.

And no, it really doesn't matter if your camera has a silent mode, it will still be plenty loud on a golf course.

I think the issue is that jet engines are not so much distracting as background noise. The sound of a shutter going off at the wrong time can be distracting.

I totally agree with you Jed. As its an etiquette of golf

ETIQUETTE; BEHAVIOUR ON THE COURSE

Consideration for Other Players Etiq.
No Disturbance or Distraction
Players should always show consideration for other players on
the course and should not disturb their play by moving,
talking or making unnecessary noise.
Players should ensure that any electronic device taken onto the
course does not distract other players.

Of course this refers to the audience watching the games too. Well if you do not have the basic etiquette or repect for the players so don't talk about enjoying the game.

I have covered all the major golf events in Singapore past 3 years. Based on my experience the marshal's will be more tolerable on first two days of the event, i.e. Thursday and Friday. Also if you keep away from the top players and take photos less famous players then you may be able to take photos also on Sat and Sun.

However, if you have told not to take photos don't take anymore while the marshal is around. Most of the marshals are volunteers and they just follow instructions they have received. Some turn their head away when you take photos and allow you taking but some will start complaining immediately when they see a camera even you would not be taking pictures.

And like others have pointed out you have to know and follow the golf etiquette while taking photos. Basic rules are no photos before the club touches the ball. And no photos while player is preparing to his shot or put, i.e. player is standing over the ball. Avoid also standing on the putting line as it distracts players usually. This applies especially in case there is only few people around a green.

This is an event where super long distance lens like 600m F4 helps to avoid any unpleasantness.

anybody going for the practice session today at sentosa?

im goin' tmrw,,trying my luck if i can shoot..hehehe
