Good GPS Navigation Set

HI all,

Just passed my TP and now I am looking for a good GPS set for dad's car. As much as I know the way back home, I do not know how to go to some places sometimes, thus the decision to get a GPS. I am looking for user-friendly and almost true time system.

Which brand to get for and price? Shinco, Holux or Garmin?

I can't remember which software Garmin uses, but Shinco and Holux both use MapKing.
Pretty decent, I will say.
Prices has gone even more southwards ever since two years ago.
But really, these couple of gadgets have served me more than well. They have been worth many times more than their prices for the countless 'life-saving' episodes.
My Shinco has blue tooth so that I can use it to answer my calls in case they come in.

My take - it's so much easier to choose a GPS nowadays. You won't go far wrong.
My humble opinion.

if you just passed your TP , my advice is not to buy any gps first but concentrate on the road. A gps will affects your concentration in certain ways and it is not advisable for someone who is new to the road.

Actually, I feel that a GPS is less distraction compared to having to refer to a Street Directory on the road I've never felt distracted all the time I was using a GPS and in fact, there is less stress compared to trying to read the road signs and figuring your way around; instead of concentrating on the road.

Try Garmin Nuvi 205. Currently selling below $200 in Sim Lim Square if I'm not wrong.

Garmin Nuvi 765 was going for $499 at IT Show. Uses Garmin MalSin Map. Easy to use and updates are relatively simple. Free map includes East Malaysia and Brunei.

Garmin get my vote! user friendly, voice navigating, fast re-calculation once u miss the exit...etc..

the most important thing is... make sure you get a reliable map source and get the updated one. i've got one version of MalSingMap which i think is quite reliable until i entered my destination as 'Spore Turf Club'. i was surprise that the estimated time taken to reach the destination from Vivo City is approx 3 hrs :sweat:

upon further checking on the proposed routes taken, noted that it went into JB and as far as Nilai and back :bigeyes:

You can pop by East Gear at Lavender...the salesman would gladly demonstrate a few models that suite your budget....for first timer...I feel it's good that you listen and try it your self...it's quite a complicated gadget to begin with :lovegrin:

Get the Garmin set. You won't go wrong with it. I went with my friend to Eastgear last thursday to get a GPS. The salesman kept pushing the Holux set. The display set for the Garmin was laggy and he used that to demonstrate that the Holux can get a fix faster. We suspect that he loaded alot of stuff into the Garmin to make it lag. My friend ended up buying the Holux and now he's looking to sell it off for a Garmin. Head to head, the Garmin will get a fix faster.

Yup they are; all are small enough to hold in your hand.

most GPS handheld units have the ability to switch to different modes such as 'Automobile' or 'Walking'.

how about the battery life? I google on the Garmin Nuvi 765. This product not bad.

I'm using the iMate Ultimate 8502 - the only Windows based phone which has a keyboard and rectangular screen. Bonus came with GPS.

Well at the time I bought it was 1k. Not sure about now.

If you want GPS alone, then an alternative is to simply get a GPS receiver and mate it with your phone via bluetooth I did that too for my phone when I'm in the car and I want faster lock time than my phone's GPS.

i have been using the Shinco 3510 for the past year or more. Serves me well. Only thing is the screen is small at 3.5inch, but Mapking serves me well.
